Propagation and Dissemination of Infection after Vaginal Transmission of Simian Immunodeficiency Virus
Christopher J. Miller,Qingsheng Li,Kristina Abel,Eun Young Kim,Zhong-Min Ma,Stephen W. Wietgrefe,Lisa La Franco-Scheuch,Lara Compton,Lijie Duan,Marta Dykhuizen Shore,Mary Zupancic,Marc Busch,John V. Carlis,Steven Wolinksy,Ashley T. Haase +14 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the mucosal barrier greatly limits the infection of cervicovaginal tissues, and thus the initial founder populations of infected cells are small, and that continuous seeding from an expanding source of production at the portal of entry is likely critical for the later establishment of a productive infection throughout the systemic LTs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Retroviral Recombination In Vivo: Viral Replication Patterns and Genetic Structure of Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) Populations in Rhesus Macaques after Simultaneous or Sequential Intravaginal Inoculation with SIVmac239Δvpx/Δvpr and SIVmac239Δnef
Eun Young Kim,Marc Busch,Kristina Abel,Linda Fritts,Patty Bustamante,Jenny Stanton,Ding Lu,Samuel Wu,Jenny Glowczwskie,Tracy Rourke,Derek Bogdan,Mike Piatak,Jeffrey D. Lifson,Ronald C. Desrosiers,Steven M. Wolinsky,Christopher J. Miller +15 more
TL;DR: The findings show that recombination can occur readily in vivo after mucosal SIV exposure and thus contributes to the generation of viral genetic diversity and enhancement of viral fitness.
Journal ArticleDOI
trans-Encapsidation of a Poliovirus Replicon by Different Picornavirus Capsid Proteins
TL;DR: The results indicate that encapsidation is regulated by specific viral nucleic acid and protein sequences and could be completely neutralized with specific antisera against each of the donor virus capsids.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of a SHIV 89.6 proviral DNA vaccine against mucosal SIVmac239 challenge
Marc Busch,Kristina Abel,Kristina Abel,Jun Li,Michael Piatak,Jeffrey D. Lifson,Christopher J. Miller +6 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the delay in systemic infection resulting from delivery of SHIV 89.6 as a plasmid decreased the effectiveness of this live attenuated vaccine.
Journal ArticleDOI
