Abstract: The buckling behaviour of corrugated paper packages was studied by means of an experimental and theoretical analysis. Mechanical behaviour of paperboard was first evaluated experimentally, then a local geometry FEM model, able to reproduce with a very good accuracy buckling loads obtained experimentally in the standard edge compression test, was developed. In order to investigate the buckling of a complete package, a finite element ‘corrugated board’ was introduced by means of a dedicated homogenization procedure. The FEM model of the package, assembled with this new element, can accurately predict the experimental data of incipient buckling observed during the standard box compression test, despite the few degrees of freedom and the minimal computational effort. TL;DR: Radial Basis Functions (RBF) mesh morphing, its theoretical basis, its numerical implementation, and its use for the solution of industrial problems, mainly in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), are introduced.
Abstract: Radial Basis Functions (RBF) mesh morphing, its theoretical basis, its numerical implementation, and its use for the solution of industrial problems, mainly in Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), are introduced. RBF theory is presented showing the mathematical framework for a basic RBF fit, its MathCAD implementation, and its usage. The equations required for a 2D case comparing RBF smoothing and pseudosolid smoothing based on Finite Elements Method (FEM) structural solution are given; RBF exhibits excellent performance and produces high quality meshes even for very large deformations. The industrial application of RBF morphing to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is covered presenting the RBF Morph software, its implementation, and a description of its working principles and performance. Practical examples include: physical problems that use CFD, shape parameterisation strategy, and modelling guidelines for setting-up a well posed RBF problem. Future directions explored are: transient shape evolution, fluid structure interaction modelling, and shape parameterization in multiphysics, multi-objective design optimization.

TL;DR: This work sets out to be a guide to the status of DT development and application in today’s academic and industrial environment by selecting 123 representative items together with 22 supplementary works to address those two perspectives, while considering technical aspects as a fundamental.
Abstract: With the rapid advancement of cyber-physical systems, Digital Twin (DT) is gaining ever-increasing attention owing to its great capabilities to realize Industry 4.0. Enterprises from different fields are taking advantage of its ability to simulate real-time working conditions and perform intelligent decision-making, where a cost-effective solution can be readily delivered to meet individual stakeholder demands. As a hot topic, many approaches have been designed and implemented to date. However, most approaches today lack a comprehensive review to examine DT benefits by considering both engineering product lifecycle management and business innovation as a whole. To fill this gap, this work conducts a state-of-the art survey of DT by selecting 123 representative items together with 22 supplementary works to address those two perspectives, while considering technical aspects as a fundamental. The systematic review further identifies eight future perspectives for DT, including modular DT, modeling consistency and accuracy, incorporation of Big Data analytics in DT models, DT simulation improvements, VR integration into DT, expansion of DT domains, efficient mapping of cyber-physical data and cloud/edge computing integration. This work sets out to be a guide to the status of DT development and application in today’s academic and industrial environment.
