In the 21st century, soft materials will become more important as functional materials because of their dynamic nature. Although soft materials are not as highly durable as hard materials, such as metals, ceramics, and engineering plastics, they can respond well to stimuli and the environment. The introduction of order into soft materials induces new dynamic functions. Liquid crystals are ordered soft materials consisting of self-organized molecules and can potentially be used as new functional materials for electron, ion, or molecular transporting, sensory, catalytic, optical, and bio-active materials. For this functionalization, unconventional materials design is required. Herein, we describe new approaches to the functionalization of liquid crystals and show how the design of liquid crystals formed by supramolecular assembly and nano-segregation leads to the formation of a variety of new self-organized functional materials.

The potential of palladacycles: more than just precatalysts

An overview on the recent developments in the field of liquid crystalline bent-core molecules (so-called banana liquid crystals) is given. After some basic issues, dealing with general aspects of the systematisation of the mesophases, development of polar order and chirality in this class of LC systems and explaining some general structure–property relationships, we focus on fascinating new developments in this field, such as modulated, undulated and columnar phases, so-called B7 phases, phase biaxiality, ferroelectric and antiferroelectric polar order in smectic and columnar phases, amplification and switching of chirality and the spontaneous formation of superstructural and supramolecular chirality.

Bent-core liquid crystals: polar order, superstructural chirality and spontaneous desymmetrisation in soft matter systems

Structures and properties of liquid crystalline phases formed by bent-core molecules are reviewed. At least eight phases designated as B1–B8 have been found, being unambiguously distinguished from phases formed by usual calamitic molecules due to a number of remarkable peculiarities. In addition to B1–B8 phases, smectic A-like phases and biaxial nematic phases formed by bent-core molecules are also reviewed. The most attractive aspects of this new class of liquid crystals are in polarity and chirality, despite being formed from achiral molecules. The bent-core mesogens are the first ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystals realized without introducing chirality. Spontaneous chiral deracemization at microscopic and macroscopic levels occurs and is controllable. Moreover, achiral bent-core molecules enhance system chirality. The interplay between polarity and chirality provides chiral nonlinear optic effects. Further interesting phenomena related to polarity and chirality are also reviewed.

Bent-Core Liquid Crystals: Their Mysterious and Attractive World

Light-driven phenomena both in living systems and nonliving materials have enabled truly fascinating and incredible dynamic architectures with terrific forms and functions. Recently, liquid crystalline materials endowed with photoresponsive capability have emerged as enticing systems. In this Review, we focus on the developments of light-driven liquid crystalline materials containing photochromic components over the past decade. Design and synthesis of photochromic liquid crystals (LCs), photoinduced phase transitions in LC, and photoalignment and photoorientation of LCs have been covered. Photomodulation of pitch, polarization, lattice constant and handedness inversion of chiral LCs is discussed. Light-driven phenomena and properties of liquid crystalline polymers, elastomers, and networks have also been analyzed. Light-Driven Liquid Crystalline Materials: From Photo-Induced Phase Transitions and Property Modulations to Applications.

In the specific context of condensed media, the significant and increasing recent interest in the α-cyanostilbene (CS) motif [ArCHC(CN)Ar] is relevant. These compounds have shown remarkable optical features in addition to interesting electrical properties, and hence they are recognized as very suitable and versatile options for the development of functional materials. This progress report is focused on current and future use of CS structures and molecular assemblies with the aim of exploring and developing for the next generations of functional materials. A critical selection of illustrative materials that contain the CS motif, including relevant subfamilies such as the dicyanodistyrylbenzene and 2,3,3-triphenylacrylonitrile shows how, driven by the self-assembly of CS blocks, a variety of properties, effects, and possibilities for practical applications can be offered to the scientific community, through different rational routes for the elaboration of advanced materials. A survey is provided on the research efforts directed toward promoting the self-assembly of the solid state (polycrystalline solids, thin films, and single crystals), liquid crystals, nanostructures, and gels with multistimuli responsiveness, and applications for sensors, organic light-emitting diodes, organic field effect transistors, organic lasers, solar cells, or bioimaging purposes.

Self-Assembled α-Cyanostilbenes for Advanced Functional Materials

We present a structural study of the mesophases of three achiral bent-core compounds with azo and azoxy bonds. The study is based on textures observation and small-angle X-ray diffraction. It is found that the materials exhibit columnar and tilted smectic mesophases. Optical second-harmonic generation measurements are performed on aligned samples of one of the compounds, and the whole second-order susceptibility tensor is determined. Finally, some simple aspects of the photoisomerization of the materials are examined.

Achiral Bent-Core Liquid Crystals with Azo and Azoxy Linkages: Structural and Nonlinear Optical Properties and Photoisomerization

The synthesis and physical characterization (thermotropic and ferroelectric behavior) of eight ortho-palladated dimers [Pd 2 (μ-Cl) 2 L * 2 ] is reported. They are derived from chiral imines HL * (HL * =p-R 1 OC 6 H 4 CH=NC 6 H 4 -OR 2 -p, with R 1 , R 2 , or both equal to (R)- or (S)-1-methylheptyl). The chiral imines, which contain one or two stereogenic centers, are not liquid crystals themselves. Ferroelectric Behavior in Metal-Containing Liquid-Crystals - A Structure-Activity Study

Hydrogen-bonded banana liquid crystals.

A liquid crystal material of bent-core molecules is investigated by means of optical texture observations, x-ray measurements, and miscibility studies. While the x-ray and miscibility data point towards a B2 phase, the texture is however unusual, showing optical isotropy and segregation in two domains with opposite gyrations. It is shown that the texture can be interpreted successfully in terms of a smectic-C(A)P(A) structure in small domains with random orientations. The optical activity data are also explained semiquantitatively.
