Journal ArticleDOI

A new ATP-binding cassette protein is involved in intracellular haem trafficking in Leishmania

TL;DR: Evidence suggests that LABCG5 is involved in the salvage of the haem released after the breakdown of internalized haemoglobin, as Leishmania is auxotrophic for haem, and the pharmacological targeting of this route could represent a novel approach to control fatal visceral leishmaniasis.
Journal ArticleDOI

LmABCB3, an atypical mitochondrial ABC transporter essential for Leishmania major virulence, acts in heme and cytosolic iron/sulfur clusters biogenesis

TL;DR: Data is presented supporting a role for LmABCB3 in the biogenesis of cytosolic ISC, essential cofactors for cell viability in all three kingdoms of life and solid evidence suggesting that Lm ABCB3 is an essential gene is shown.
Journal ArticleDOI

Carbohydrate-naphthalene diimide conjugates as potential antiparasitic drugs: Synthesis, evaluation and structure-activity studies.

TL;DR: Promising antiparasitic activity and selectivity against control mammalian cells, together with their peculiar mechanism of action, render the carb-NDI conjugates as suitable candidates for the development of an innovative treatment of trypanosomiasis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Leishmania heme uptake involves LmFLVCRb, a novel porphyrin transporter essential for the parasite.

TL;DR: Results show that Leishmania parasites can rescue heme through plasma membrane transporter LFLVCRb, which could constitute a novel target for therapeutic intervention against Leishmaniasis and probably other trypanosomatid parasites in which FLVCR genes are also present.
