Sociology was born as an attempt to delimit an object of investigation offered by society as a social reality. The ambition was that of “treating the social facts as things” (Durkheim) or of understanding and explaining the social relations by respecting an “axiological neutrality” (Max Weber). Today, however, we are in the presence of a new kind of sociologists, and they are by no means the less popular ones, who are not trying to avoid assessments in their analysis of the present social world. I have in mind especially two sociologists, Ulrich Beck (Munich) and David Held (London). I will discuss in particular the view of sociology presented in a recent book of Ulrich Beck (Macht und Gegenmacht im globalen Zeitalter, 2002, translated into French under the title Pouvoir et contre-pouvoir a l’ere de la mondialisation, 2003), and I will show some analogies between Beck and Held. Finally, I will try to identify the points hat make the present sociological epistemology different from that of the great founders of this science.

Towards a cognitive audiovisual translatology: subtitles and embodied cognition

Se estudia el impacto de los subtitulos en el mismo idioma de la narrativa audiovisual segun el idioma del receptor (nativo o extranjero). Estudiantes de dos universidades australianas y una espanola fueron asignados al azar a uno de dos grupos experimentales en los que se veia un drama con la banda sonora original en ingles con subtitulos en esa misma lengua (n=81) o sin subtitulos (n=92). La muestra incluia un grupo control de hablantes nativos de ingles, ademas de grupos de hablantes nativos de chino mandarin, coreano y espanol con ingles como lengua extranjera. Como medidas post-hoc, los participantes reportaron, mediante escalas Likert, su percepcion de presencia, transporte, realismo percibido, identificacion con los personajes y disfrute. Los resultados muestran que los subtitulos no reducen las medidas de inmersion. Ademas, que los subtitulos producen mayores puntuaciones de transporte, identificacion con los personajes y percepcion de realismo, cuya varianza se explica, esencialmente, por la primera lengua de los receptores y sus habitos de visionado. Asimismo, los resultados senalan que ni a la presencia y ni al disfrute les afectan la condicion experimental o el idioma del receptor. Finalmente, muestran que el transporte es la medida mas reveladora de la inmersion porque produce las correlaciones mas fuertes y consistentes, aparte de ser un predictor significativo del disfrute de los espectadores.

Original Language Subtitles: Their Effects on the Native and Foreign Viewer

This study addresses the effect of narratives offering a positive depiction of gay men on the audience’s change in attitude towards homosexuality. Specifically, it analyzes the relationship of character identification, inter-group contact, religiosity and gender with homophobia reduction. One hundred and fifty students of a Serbian University (MAge = 22.13, SD = 2.28) filled in a questionnaire measuring socio-demographic information and the instrument H25 assessing homophobia. Two months later, they watched a movie depicting gay men in a positive manner and completed a questionnaire containing the homophobia scale and questions related to identification with the main character, inter-group contact and religiosity. The results showed that watching the movie is related to a reduction of homophobia and that character identification and inter-group contact are negatively correlated with homophobia, whereas religiosity is positively correlated with it. Results also show that there is a negative correlation between religiosity and the attitude change induced by the movie, and that men express higher level of homophobia than women. The study contributes to the knowledge of the mechanisms reducing homophobia through media.

Positive Representation of Gay Characters in Movies for Reducing Homophobia

Impact of interactivity on identifi cation with characters in fi ction. The effect of interactivity on identifi cation with characters in audiovisual fi ction was observed. 310 participants were asked to watch a fi lm in one of these two conditions: 1) interactive (they selected the plot), and 2) non-interactive (they consumed the fi ction in a conventional way). After watching the movie, they completed a questionnaire with the EDI scale of identifi cation and empathy with characters, created by Igartua and Paez. The capacity to intervene in the confi guration of the plot (interactivity) affected identifi cation with characters. The results provide data about the psychology of media and interactivity in communication and allow us to understand the processes of empathy and identifi cation with characters.
