TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how and why a shared historical memory of Nyerere is being built or contested to define, mediate and con- struct Tanzanian conceptions of morality, belonging, and citizenship in the polis today.
Abstract: Since the 2000s, Tanzania has witnessed the return in the public sphere of a reconfigured version of Ujamaa as a set of moral principles embodied in the figure of the first president of Tanzania, Julius Kambarage Nyerere. The persisting traces of Nyerere and Ujamaa are not so evident in actual political practices or economic pol- icies, but rather in collective debates about politics and morality—in short, in contempo- rary imaginaries of the nation. Contributing to a long-standing discussion of the moral stature of Tanzania's "father of the nation," the article explores how and why a shared historical memory of Nyerere is being built or contested to define, mediate, and con- struct Tanzanian conceptions of morality, belonging, and citizenship in the polis today.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore various aspects of the electoral process to contribute in-depth analyses of the last elections and highlight the structural factors underlying election and voting in Kenya including the political system, culture and political transition, and interrogate the short-term trends and issues that influence the new political order.
Abstract: During the run-up to Kenya?s 2013 general elections, crucial political and civic questions were raised Could past mistakes, especially political and ethnic-related violence, be avoided this time round? Would the spectre of the 2007 post-electoral violence positively or negatively affect debates and voting? How would politicians, electoral bodies such as the IEBC, the Kenyan civil society, and the international community weigh in on the elections? More generally, would the 2013 elections bear witness to the building up of an electoral culture in Kenya, characterized by free and fair elections, or would it show that voting is still weakened by political malpractices, partisan opinions and emotional reactions? Would Kenya?s past be inescapable or would it prepare the scene for a new political order? Kenya?s Past as Prologue adopts a multidisciplinary perspective ? mainly built upon field-based ethnography and a selection of case studies ? to answer these questions Under the leadership of the French Institute for Research in Africa (Institut franc?ais de recherche en Afrique, IFRA), political scientists, historians and anthropologists explore various aspects of the electoral process to contribute in-depth analyses of the last elections They highlight the structural factors underlying election and voting in Kenya including the political system, culture and political transition They also interrogate the short-term trends and issues that influence the new political order The book provides insight into specific case studies, situations and contexts, thus bringing nuances and diversity into focus to better assess Kenya?s evolving electoral democracy

TL;DR: The role of the media in the production and circulation of alternative narratives of the 1964 Revolution and its aftermath by focusing on the Zanzibari newspaper Dira is explored in this article.
Abstract: For years, the official narrative of the Zanzibari nation imposed a specific conception of identity and citizenship built on a racial understanding of the Isles’ history and the silencing of collective memories of violence perpetrated by the 1964-1975 regime. The democratization process of the mid-1990s allowed for the emergence of a critical public sphere which contributed to the public circulation of alternative national imaginaries and the resurfacing of clandestine collective memories. This paper explores the role of the press in the production and circulation of alternative narratives of the 1964 Revolution and its aftermath by focusing on the Zanzibari newspaper Dira. It shows how issues raised in the newspaper’s memory entrepreneurs engage with collective representations of belonging and the nation in Zanzibar.
