TL;DR: The effectiveness of the proposed concept, consisting of a twisting algorithm for control and supertwisting algorithm for differentiation, is demonstrated by experimental results.
Abstract: In this paper, the control of an electronic throttle valve based on second-order sliding-mode concepts is presented. The so-called twisting algorithm is chosen as the control law. It is shown that the tracking performance for discontinuous reference signals is significantly improved by introducing nonlinear damping by appropriately specifying the sliding surface. The control concept requires the measured plate angle as well as its time derivative, which is computed with the help of a robust exact differentiator. The effectiveness of the proposed concept, consisting of a twisting algorithm for control and supertwisting algorithm for differentiation, is demonstrated by experimental results.

TL;DR: These examples reveal that the standard accuracy of the homogeneous second-order sliding mode is preserved and, in contrast to the explicit Euler discretized algorithm, in the presence of exact discrete measurements, the precision of the controlled variable is insensitive to oversized control gains.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a constructive design paradigm to generate differentiator parameters which is seen to provide a natural framework to facilitate simple online adaptation of the chosen gains.
Abstract: Higher order sliding-mode differentiators have received a great deal of attention in the literature. For the case of reconstructing the first derivative, theoretical convergence conditions for the differentiator are available from which differentiator parameters may be selected. For the case of higher order derivatives, some parameter settings have been suggested for differentiators of certain order but there is no tuning algorithm available to determine convergent parameters for differentiators of arbitrary order. Whilst recognising the strong theoretical properties of sliding-mode differentiators, practitioners report difficulties in achieving wide envelope performance from a single set of differentiator parameters. This paper proposes a constructive design paradigm to generate differentiator parameters which is seen to provide a natural framework to facilitate simple online adaptation of the chosen gains. Simulation experiments as well as experimental results are presented to demonstrate the proposed approach.

TL;DR: The discrete-time version of Levant's arbitrary order robust exact differentiator is extended by taking into account also nonlinear higher order terms, which preserves the asymptotic accuracies with respect to sampling and noise known from the continuous-time algorithm.
Abstract: The discrete-time version of Levant's arbitrary order robust exact differentiator, which is a forward Euler discretized version of the continuous-time algorithm enhanced by linear higher order terms, is extended by taking into account also nonlinear higher order terms. The resulting differentiator preserves the asymptotic accuracies with respect to sampling and noise known from the continuous-time algorithm. It is demonstrated in a simulation example and by differentiating a measured signal that the nonlinear higher order terms allow reducing the high-frequency switching amplitude whenever the $(n+1)$ th derivative of the signal to be differentiated vanishes, leading to an improvement in the precision.

Abstract: This survey presents various methods of improving the overall estimation quality in the class of extended state observers (ESO), which estimate not only the conventional states of the system, but the acting disturbance as well. This type of observers is crucial in forming the active disturbance rejection control structure (ADRC), where the precision of online perturbation reconstruction and cancellation directly influences the robustness of the closed-loop control system. Various aspects of the observer-based disturbance estimation/rejection loop are covered by this work and divided into three categories, related with observer: structure, tuning, and working conditions. The survey is dedicated to researchers and practitioners who are interested in increasing the efficiency of their ADRC-based governing schemes.

TL;DR: A self-tuning longitudinal slip ratio controller (LSC) based on the nonsingular and fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) control method is designed to improve the tracking accuracy and response speed of the actuators and the proposed integrated chassis control strategies are verified by computer simulations.
Abstract: The inherent flexibility of hierarchical structure scheme with main-servo loop control structure is proposed to the problem of integrated chassis control system for the vehicle. It includes both main loop, which calculates and allocates the aim force using the optimal robust control algorithm and servo loop control systems, which track and achieve the target force using the onboard independent brake actuators. In fact, for the brake actuator, the aim friction is obtained by tracking the corresponding slip ratio of target force. For the coefficient of tire-road friction varying with different road surface, to get the nonlinear time-varying target slip ratio, the most famous quasi-static magic formula is proposed to estimate and predict real-time coefficient of different road surface and the constrained hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) is used to identify the key parameters of the magic formula on-line. Then, a self-tuning longitudinal slip ratio controller (LSC) based on the nonsingular and fast terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) control method is designed to improve the tracking accuracy and response speed of the actuators. At last, the proposed integrated chassis control strategies and the self-tuning control strategies are verified by computer simulations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate different control methods for HVAC and R systems and introduce the fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) method as a new strategy to address the nonlinearity, multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), complexity and coupling effect features of the systems.
Abstract: Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the major energy-consuming devices in buildings. Nowadays, due to the high demand for HVAC system installation in buildings, designing an effective controller in order to decrease the energy consumption of the devices while meeting the thermal comfort demands in buildings are the most important goals of control designers. The purpose of this article is to investigate the different control methods for Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC & R) systems. The advantages and disadvantages of each control method are discussed and finally the Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM) method is introduced as a new strategy for HVAC systems. The FCM method is an intelligent and advanced control technique to address the nonlinearity, Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO), complexity and coupling effect features of the systems. The significance of this method and improvements by this method are compared with other methods.

TL;DR: A practical tracking control scheme of an AET system is developed using a continuous fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode (CFNTSM) technique based on uncertainty observer, and the closed-loop stability and finite-time convergence are presented based on the Lyapunov stability theory.
Abstract: The control of automobile electronic throttle (AET) systems is a challenging task owing to multiple nonlinearities, i.e., transmission friction, gear backlash, limp-home spring set, and external load disturbance. In this paper, a practical tracking control scheme of an AET system is developed using a continuous fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode (CFNTSM) technique based on uncertainty observer. By using the prescribed CFNTSM surface and fast terminal sliding mode-based reaching element, the proposed control implementation guarantees the fast error convergence characteristic and high tracking accuracy under parameter uncertainties and perturbations. Furthermore, due to the adoption of the finite-time exact observer (FEO) for the lumped uncertainty estimation in the controller, the ease of the selection of the control gains is well-achieved since they only depend on the uncertainty estimation error. The closed-loop stability and finite-time convergence are presented based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Experimental verifications are conducted to validate the remarkable performance of the proposed control, in terms of the step and sinusoidal tracking as well as anti-disturbance ability.
