Carbon dioxide capture from point sources like coal-fired power plants is considered to be a solution for stabilizing the CO(2) level in the atmosphere to avoid global warming. Methane is an important energy source that is often highly diluted by nitrogen in natural gas. For the separation of CO(2) and CH(4) from N(2) in flue gas and natural gas, respectively, sorbents with high and reversible gas uptake, high gas selectivity, good chemical and thermal stability, and low cost are desired. Here we report the synthesis and CO(2), CH(4), and N(2) adsorption properties of hierarchically porous electron-rich covalent organonitridic frameworks (PECONFs). These were prepared by simple condensation reactions between inexpensive, commercially available nitridic and electron-rich aromatic building units. The PECONF materials exhibit high and reversible CO(2) and CH(4) uptake and exceptional selectivities of these gases over N(2). The materials do not oxidize in air up to temperature of 400 °C.

Definite complexes between various uncharged molecules are still relatively unexplored 1) although this type of complexation plays a fundamental role in biochemical processes, eg the base-pairing of nucleic acids 2), enzyme/substrate or pharmacon/receptor interactions “The molecular biology is a striking example of the fact that molecules which fit into one another sterically and functionally, lead together to fundamentally new functional possibilities” 1d) A suitable approach in this respect is “the planning and synthesis of arrangements of various types of molecules, which are all constructed such that they fit into one another and thus by themselves and in an organized way build up to functional systems where the functional groups are held fast in the desired arrangement by the intermolecular forces” 1d)

Complexation of uncharged molecules and anions by crown-type host molecules

We describe an approach to regular triangular arrays of dipolar molecular rotors based on insertion of dipolar rotator carrying shafts as guests into channels of a host, tris(o-phenylenedioxy)cyclotriphosphazene (TPP). The rotor guests can either enter the bulk of the host or stay at or near the surface, if a suitable stopper is installed at the end of the shaft. Differential scanning calorimetry, solid-state NMR, and powder X-ray diffraction were used to examine the insertion of a dipolar rotor synthesized for the purpose, 1-n-hexadecyl-12-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-p-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane, and it was found that it forms a surface inclusion compound. Rotational barriers from 1.2 to 9 kcal/mol were found by dielectric spectroscopy and were attributed to rotors inserted into the surface to different degrees, some rubbing the surface as they turn.
