Synthesis, crystal growth and studies on non-linear optical property of new chalcones

The third order nonlinear optical properties of 4′-methoxy chalcone and its derivatives have been investigated using a single-beam Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The 4′-methoxy chalcone and its derivatives are donor–acceptor–acceptor (D–A–A) and donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) type intramolecular charge transfer molecules. The nonlinear response in these molecules was found to increase with increase in (a) the electron acceptor strength in D–A–A type and (b) the donor strength of the substituted group in D–A–D type molecules. The χ(3) value in these molecules is found to be of the order of 10-13 esu. The observed increase in the third order nonlinearity in these molecules clearly indicates the electronic origin. The compounds exhibit good optical limiting at 532 nm. The best optical limiting behavior was observed with the molecule substituted by a strong electron donor.

Of 140 newly synthesized chalcone-analogous materials, 56 specimens were observed to be efficient for nonlinear optical second harmonic generation (SHG). The SHG efficiency of 3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(3-pyridyl)-2-propen-1-one is discussed on the basis of crystal structure and MO calculation. In this crystal, molecules arrange themselves almost ideal manner for SHG.

Novel Organic SHG Materials

To clarify behavior and sliding resistance of a spread foundation under combined load, static vertical loading test, and static vertical and lateral combined loading tests were conducted on a spread foundation on sand. The sliding resistance under the combined load was caused by the soil failure beneath the foundation. After the peak of the lateral resistance, settlement and horizontal displacement increased although vertical and lateral load did not increase. When the vertical load is less than about 1/2 of the ultimate bearing capacity, the vertical load could be retained and the horizontal displacement was greater than the settlement.
