Demographic, physical and mental health assessments in the adolescent brain and cognitive development study: Rationale and description
M Deanna,Matthew D. Albaugh,Shelli Avenevoli,Linda Chang,Duncan B. Clark,Meyer D. Glantz,James J. Hudziak,Terry L. Jernigan,Susan F. Tapert,Deborah A. Yurgelun-Todd,Nelly Alia-Klein,Alexandra Potter,Martin P. Paulus,Devin Prouty,Robert A. Zucker,Kenneth J. Sher +15 more
TL;DR: This battery will provide a foundational baseline assessment of the youth’s current function so as to permit characterization of stability and change in key domains over time, and will also be utilized to identify both resilience markers that predict healthy development and risk factors for later adverse outcomes in physical health, mental health, and substance use and abuse.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trajectories of cortical thickness maturation in normal brain development--The importance of quality control procedures.
Simon Ducharme,Simon Ducharme,Matthew D. Albaugh,Tuong-Vi Nguyen,James J. Hudziak,José María Mateos-Pérez,Aurélie Labbe,Alan C. Evans,Sherif Karama,Sherif Karama +9 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that CTh follows a simple linear decline in most cortical areas by age 5, and all areas byage 8, which further supports the crucial importance of implementing post-processing QC in CTh studies of development, aging, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Amygdala Volume Associated With Alcohol Abuse Relapse and Craving
Jana Wrase,Nicos Makris,Dieter F. Braus,Karl Mann,Michael N. Smolka,David N. Kennedy,Verne S. Caviness,Steven M. Hodge,Lena Tang,Matthew D. Albaugh,David A. Ziegler,Orin C. Davis,Christian Kissling,Gunter Schumann,Hans C. Breiter,Andreas Heinz +15 more
TL;DR: A significant decrease of amygdala volume in alcohol-dependent subjects was associated with increased alcohol craving before imaging and an increased alcohol intake during the 6-month follow-up period, suggesting a relationship between amygdala volume reduction, alcohol craving, and prospective relapse into alcohol consumption.
Journal ArticleDOI
Anxious/Depressed Symptoms are Linked to Right Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortical Thickness Maturation in Healthy Children and Young Adults
Simon Ducharme,Matthew D. Albaugh,James J. Hudziak,Kelly N. Botteron,Tuong-Vi Nguyen,Catherine Truong,Alan C. Evans,Sherif Karama +7 more
TL;DR: The dynamic impact of age on relations between vmPFC and negative affect in the developing brain is demonstrated and potential neurobiological mechanisms underlying this maturation pattern are proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Decreased Absolute Amygdala Volume in Cocaine Addicts
Nikos Makris,Gregory P. Gasic,Larry J. Seidman,Larry J. Seidman,Jill M. Goldstein,David R. Gastfriend,Igor Elman,Matthew D. Albaugh,Steven M. Hodge,David A. Ziegler,Fred Sheahan,Verne S. Caviness,Ming T. Tsuang,Ming T. Tsuang,Ming T. Tsuang,David N. Kennedy,Steven E. Hyman,Bruce R. Rosen,Hans C. Breiter +18 more
TL;DR: A condition that predisposes the individual to cocaine dependence by affecting the amygdala, or a primary event early in the course of cocaine use, is argued.
