Abstract: An islanded microgrid (MG) including low-inertia converter-based distributed generations (DGs) is subjected to instability. The virtual inertia concept was proposed to alleviate the stability issues by imitating the synchronous generators behavior. This paper spotlights on the optimization of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) parameters and virtual impedances (VI) in islanded MGs using particle swarm optimization (PSO). A small-signal model for MG is developed at first. The permissible ranges of virtual inertia (J) and virtual damping (D) based on MG small-signal stability are scrutinized afterwards. Moreover, VI are considered to lower the reactive power mismatch between converters. Finally, considering the permitted intervals for these parameters, an optimization method and objective function are defined to calculate VSG parameters and VI in the islanded MG. The proposed optimization method enhances the small-signal stability of the MG, decreases the current overshoot and minimizes reactive power mismatches. Simulation results drawn by the “VSG + VI” control include three scenarios. The effectiveness of the proposed “VSG + VI” control method in comparison with “droop” control, “droop + VI”, “non-optimal VSG + VI”, and “VSG ” is verified through simulation studies.

Abstract: This paper presents the protective effects of shield wire coupled with Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) arresters in a distribution network located in a severe lightning area. The presented test case is the IEEE 34-node radial distribution test feeder injected with multiple lightning strokes and simulated with the Alternative Transients Program/ Electromagnetic Transients program (ATP/EMTP). The response of the distribution line to lightning strokes was modeled with three different cases: no protection, protection with surge arresters and protection with a combination of shield wire and arresters. Simulations were made to compare the resulting overvoltages on the line for all the analyzed cases.

Abstract: Distribution automation (DA) application for fault management in the electricity distribution networks is one of the main potential remedial actions to reduce customers' outage times and hence improve service reliability. As a result, various automation schemes have been developed and introduced in different countries and by different venders. The impacts of implementing a specific automation scheme on reliability indices of a given distribution system can be different from other available automation schemes. For this reason, when comparing the available automation schemes with each other or with the other reliability improvement measures, it is necessary to perform a course of reliability worth assessment activities in the related decision making process. This paper aims to quantitatively assess the reliability worth of employing an Automatic Loop Restoration Scheme (ALRS) for urban distribution networks. Distributed intelligence and peer-to-peer communication are the main features of this feeder automation scheme. An urban distribution reliability test system is utilized in this paper to perform the reliability worth assessment analyses.

Abstract: This paper presents a time-sequential simu- lation technique incorporating the effects of interruptions and voltage sags in the reliability cost/worth evaluation of distribution systems equipped with different overvoltage protection types. The interruption and voltage sag data for different overvoltage protection schemes was obtained from long-term measurements performed at a 110/20 kV substation. Studies conducted in a real distribution system show that the type of overvoltage protection has more impact on network reliability than has earlier been thought.

Abstract: The electric and magnetic fields of overhead high voltage transmission lines are still a critical problem for new construction because of their biological effects on the human body. This issue has been a subject of scientific interest and public concern for the risk of the electric and magnetic fields on living organisms. Accordingly, the overhead transmission lines are considered a source of such this risk due to their high electric and magnetic fields in the populated areas. Because of the recent concerns that electric besides magnetic fields, generated by overhead transmission lines, electric power researchers have been trying to find effective methods for the mitigation of the electrical and magnetic fields to be in the range of acceptable limits. Researchers have been trying to find transmission line geometries that will reduce these electric and magnetic fields. Therefore, in this article two novel methods of reducing the electric and magnetic fields are discussed, one is to change the position of the center phase to optimize the delta configuration and the other is to use more than two shielding wires with calculating the currents in these wires. The obtained results of the two proposed methods are compared with the electric as well as magnetic fields, and the right-of-way values of the present conventional configuration. Additionally, this article presents a case study carried out on an Egyptian 500 kV high voltage overhead transmission line for the mitigation of magnetic and electric field intensities.

It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Abstract: This chapter discusses leading problems linked to energy that the world is now confronting and to propose some ideas concerning possible solutions. Oil deserves special attention among all energy sources. Since the beginning of 1981, it has merely been continuing and enhancing the downward movement in consumption and prices caused by excessive rises, especially for light crudes such as those from Africa, and the slowing down of worldwide economic growth. Densely-populated oil-producing countries need to produce to live, to pay for their food and their equipment. If the economic growth of the industrialized countries were to be 4%, even if investment in the rational use of energy were pushed to the limit and the development of nonpetroleum energy sources were also pursued actively, it would be extremely difficult to prevent a sharp rise in prices. It is evident that it is absolutely necessary to pursue actively the development of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power if a physical shortage of energy is not to block economic growth.
