TL;DR: A new intelligent integration between an IoT platform and deep learning neural network (DNN) algorithm for the online monitoring of computer numerical control (CNC) machines is introduced, indicating that deep learning can outperform other traditional machine learning methods for vibration control.
Abstract: This paper introduces a new intelligent integration between an IoT platform and deep learning neural network (DNN) algorithm for the online monitoring of computer numerical control (CNC) machines. The proposed infrastructure is utilized for monitoring the cutting process while maintaining the cutting stability of CNC machines in order to ensure effective cutting processes that can help to increase the quality of products. For this purpose, a force sensor is installed in the milling CNC machine center to measure the vibration conditions. Accordingly, an IoT architecture is designed to connect the sensor node and the cloud server to capture the real-time machine’s status via message queue telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol. To classify the different cutting conditions (i.e., stable cutting and unstable cuttings), an improved model of DNN is designed in order to maintain the healthy state of the CNC machine. As a result, the developed deep learning can accurately investigate if the transmitted data of the smart sensor via the internet is real cutting data or fake data caused by cyber-attacks or the inefficient reading of the sensor due to the environment temperature, humidity, and noise signals. The outstanding results are obtained from the proposed approach indicating that deep learning can outperform other traditional machine learning methods for vibration control. The Contact elements for IoT are utilized to display the cutting information on a graphical dashboard and monitor the cutting process in real-time. Experimental verifications are performed to conduct different cutting conditions of slot milling while implementing the proposed deep machine learning and IoT-based monitoring system. Diverse scenarios are presented to verify the effectiveness of the developed system, where it can disconnect immediately to secure the system automatically when detecting the cyber-attack and switch to the backup broker to continue the runtime operation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the integration between different DGA techniques not only improves the oil fault condition monitoring but also overcomes the individual weakness, and this positive feature is proved by using 532 samples from the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC).
Abstract: Power transformers are considered important and expensive items in electrical power networks. In this regard, the early discovery of potential faults in transformers considering datasets collected from diverse sensors can guarantee the continuous operation of electrical systems. Indeed, the discontinuity of these transformers is expensive and can lead to excessive economic losses for the power utilities. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA), as well as partial discharge (PD) tests considering different intelligent sensors for the measurement process, are used as diagnostic techniques for detecting the oil insulation level. This paper includes two parts; the first part is about the integration among the diagnosis results of recognized dissolved gas analysis techniques, in this part, the proposed techniques are classified into four techniques. The integration between the different DGA techniques not only improves the oil fault condition monitoring but also overcomes the individual weakness, and this positive feature is proved by using 532 samples from the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). The second part overview the experimental setup for (66/11.86 kV-40 MVA) power transformer which exists in the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC), the first section in this part analyzes the dissolved gases concentricity for many samples, and the second section illustrates the measurement of PD particularly in this case study. The results demonstrate that precise interpretation of oil transformers can be provided to system operators, thanks to the combination of the most appropriate techniques.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanocomposites with enhanced electrical and mechanical properties by incorporating titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles within PVC chains.
Abstract: The current study aims to develop polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nanocomposites with enhanced electrical and mechanical properties by incorporating titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles within PVC chains. Different loading of nanoparticles and different nanoparticle surface states were considered. The surface states are unfunctionalised, functionalised using vinyl silane and functionalised using amino silane. The choice of a most suitable surface state was a critical factor that guarantees a good dispersion of nanoparticles and consequently enhances the compatibility between TiO2 and PVC matrix. The process followed in the PVC/TiO2 nanocomposites preparation, loaded with different wt.% of TiO2 nanoparticles, was the solvent method. The dielectric properties measured here were the relative permittivity (ɛ r), dielectric loss (tanδ), breakdown strength (AC and DC under uniform field) and the internal partial discharges (PDs) within insulation cavity. All measurements have been performed under room temperature and at frequency ranged from 20 to 1.0 MHz. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the samples like elongation, elasticity modulus and tensile strength were also studied. Vinyl silane showed better improvements in both electrical and mechanical performances compared to the amino silane, especially in cases of high weight fractions of TiO2. This is because of the improvement in the PVC-TiO2 interfacial region arise from the similarity of polarity and surface tension values of vinyl silane with that of PVC matrix and TiO2 nanoparticles.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for "experimenters") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment.
Abstract: THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss leading problems linked to energy that the world is now confronting and propose some ideas concerning possible solutions, and conclude that it is necessary to pursue actively the development of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power.
Abstract: This chapter discusses leading problems linked to energy that the world is now confronting and to propose some ideas concerning possible solutions. Oil deserves special attention among all energy sources. Since the beginning of 1981, it has merely been continuing and enhancing the downward movement in consumption and prices caused by excessive rises, especially for light crudes such as those from Africa, and the slowing down of worldwide economic growth. Densely-populated oil-producing countries need to produce to live, to pay for their food and their equipment. If the economic growth of the industrialized countries were to be 4%, even if investment in the rational use of energy were pushed to the limit and the development of nonpetroleum energy sources were also pursued actively, it would be extremely difficult to prevent a sharp rise in prices. It is evident that it is absolutely necessary to pursue actively the development of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power if a physical shortage of energy is not to block economic growth.
