Abstract: In Finland, overhead covered conductors (CC) are commonly used in the medium voltage (MV) networks because the distribution loads in rural areas are not heavy and are widely distributed in the forested terrain. Such parts of the network are exposed to leaning trees and therefore partial discharging into the overhead CC frequently occurs. In this paper, a multi-end correlation-based technique for locating partial discharge (PD) sources on CC lines is presented. The theory of maximum correlation factor is used in order to find the time differences between signal arrivals at three synchronized-measuring points. This helps to solve the problem of varying parameters of the CC line that can change the propagation velocity and the problem of identifying the arrival times of the corresponding PD pulses at different measuring points. The algorithm is developed and tested using a simulated study and experimentally verified using an alternating current (ac) energized system. The Electromagnetic Transient Program-Alternative Transient Program (EMTP-ATP) is used to implement and analyze a PD monitoring system. The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is used to de-noise PD signals measured from a Rogowski coil utilized as a high frequency transducer. The noise model is added to the simulated-power network signals and then a DWT-based de-noising process is carried out. The proposed algorithm performance is evaluated by extracting the high frequency features using a windowed-standard deviation. The simulated and experimental evaluations prove that accurate PD source location can be achieved using the proposed algorithm technique.

Abstract: Majority of the vehicles commercially available today and on the roads today use internal combustion engines (ICE) for the power source. Such engines utilize only small share of the fuel primary energy converted to kinetic energy, however majority of fuel primary energy is wasted while dissipated in the ambient air as waste heat or as hot exhaust gas. A remarkable potential for improving the efficiency of the ICE systems lies in the recovery of the energy wasted today. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art of current research of exhaust waste heat recovery systems utilizing thermoelectric generators (TEGs). Such systems provide the direct heat-to-electric energy conversion and allow building the exhaust energy recovery systems without adding moving parts to the vehicles. The review will present the overview related particularly to vehicle engines exhaust energy recovery systems, introducing the key parameters, components and factors that determine the performance of such systems.

Abstract: In the past decade, enhancing the reliability of distribution networks by means of optimal switch placement has attracted much attention. In the case of failures in a distribution feeder, such disconnect switches will isolate the faulted section, and the customers downstream of the faulted point can be supplied by neighboring feeders through tie lines. Nevertheless, such reserve branches not only might experience failures themselves but also may not even exist prior to the switch placement. Accordingly, this paper presents a mathematical-programming-based model for the concurrent placement of disconnect switches and tie lines in the distribution networks to enhance the service reliability, considering both practical benefits and drawbacks of such reserve branches. In the proposed model, installation of remote-controlled and manual switches at various locations of distribution feeders together with potential tie lines are considered. Also, practical operational constraints regarding the utilization of tie lines, and the impact of failures in such reserve branches on the reliability indices are meticulously modeled in the proposed formulation. Unreliability cost is estimated based on a reward-penalty scheme and the revenue lost due to the not supplied demand during the network contingencies. As an instance of mixed-integer linear programming, the proposed optimization model can be efficiently solved to the global optimality using commercially available software. Aiming at investigating the applicability of the proposed model, it is implemented on a test network, and the results are thoroughly analyzed through various case studies.

It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Abstract: This chapter discusses leading problems linked to energy that the world is now confronting and to propose some ideas concerning possible solutions. Oil deserves special attention among all energy sources. Since the beginning of 1981, it has merely been continuing and enhancing the downward movement in consumption and prices caused by excessive rises, especially for light crudes such as those from Africa, and the slowing down of worldwide economic growth. Densely-populated oil-producing countries need to produce to live, to pay for their food and their equipment. If the economic growth of the industrialized countries were to be 4%, even if investment in the rational use of energy were pushed to the limit and the development of nonpetroleum energy sources were also pursued actively, it would be extremely difficult to prevent a sharp rise in prices. It is evident that it is absolutely necessary to pursue actively the development of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power if a physical shortage of energy is not to block economic growth.
