Update on the global abundance and distribution of breeding Gentoo Penguins ( Pygoscelis papua)

TL;DR: The assessment identifies South Georgia and sub-Antarctic islands in the Indian Ocean as being the most critical data gaps for this species and suggests that the global population has increased by approximately 11% since 2013, with even greater increases along the WAP.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tourism and stress hormone measures in Gentoo Penguins on the Antarctic Peninsula

TL;DR: The results suggest that current tourism management guidelines on the Antarctic Peninsula are effective at preventing increased stress in Gentoo Penguins as measured by hormonal markers, and demonstrate the use of guano as a non-invasive, low-impact methodology for monitoring Gentoo Penguin stress.
Journal ArticleDOI

Listing Foreign Species under the Endangered Species Act: A Primer for Conservation Biologists

TL;DR: An overview of the historical, legal, and administrative elements of the ESA as have been applied to foreign species aims to provide a straightforward guide for ecologists and conservation biologists on this complex legal issue.
Journal ArticleDOI

Variation in the ecstatic display call of the Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) across regional geographic scales

TL;DR: This article used acoustic recordings of ambient colony sound at 22 breeding colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Argentina to address two main questions regarding Gentoo Penguin vocalizations: (1) How do ecstatic display calls vary both within and between individuals, colonies, and regions? (2) Can ecstatic display call be used...
Journal ArticleDOI

Improving the use of biological data in Antarctic management

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a set of data management and use standards for Antarctic biological data to improve the transparency and quality of these evaluations and to facilitate improved assessment of both immediate and long-term impacts of human activities in the Antarctic.
