TL;DR: In this paper, a three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter using a conventional three-leg converter without the need of power supply at DC bus has been described.
Abstract: This paper describes a three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter using a conventional three-leg converter, without the need of power supply at DC bus Two approaches have been developed to control the active filter Both control strategies consider harmonics and zero sequence components in the voltage and current simultaneously The first one provides constant power and the second one sinusoidal current to the source, even under unbalanced voltage conditions Simulation results from a complete model of shunt active filter are presented to validate and compare the control strategies

TL;DR: In this paper, the instantaneous power theory was introduced for steady and transient states and for generic voltage and current waveforms, and an example showing how this theory can be used to design and control an active power filter is presented.
Abstract: Conventional active and reactive power theory, valid for the steady-state analysis is reviewed. The instantaneous power theory, introduced by H. Akagi et al. (1983, 1984) is also presented. This instantaneous theory is valid for steady and transient states and for generic voltage and current waveforms. Some examples explaining the physical meaning of the new concepts are presented. By using the concepts of symmetrical components together with the new theory, the powers in an unbalanced system are analyzed, including the zero-sequence instantaneous power. An example showing how this theory can be used to design and control an active power filter is presented. Some simulation results are presented and discussed. >

Abstract: The power circuit of a general active power line conditioner (APLC) is based on series and shunt power converters that share a single DC link. In the present paper, a generic control concept for these series and shunt converters is proposed. It is based on the instantaneous real and imaginary power theory. In fact, the resulting equipment deals with the custom power and FACTS concepts. This equipment incorporates not only the compensation functions at the fundamental frequency like a unified power flow controller (UPFC), but also provides active harmonic mitigation capabilities. For these reasons, the compensator proposed here is called the universal active power line conditioner (UPLC). Simulation and experimental results are presented to confirm that the new approach has better performance than those obtained by controllers based on traditional concepts of active and reactive power.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented the general equations that relate the new concepts of instantaneous active and reactive power theory and the well known theory of symmetrical components for the case of 3-phase 4-wire systems, where zero sequence components and harmonics may be present in both voltages and currents.
Abstract: This paper presents the general equations that relate the new concepts of instantaneous active and reactive power theory and the well known theory of Symmetrical Components, for the case of 3-phase 4-wire systems, where zero sequence components and harmonics may be present in both voltages and currents. Based on these equations, new control algorithms for 3-phase 4-wire shunt and series active filters for unbalanced power systems are proposed and validated through simulations. The control algorithms presented here are very important for active power filter design and also for FACTS technology reactive power compensators. >

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This paper presents a comprehensive review of active filter configurations, control strategies, selection of components, other related economic and technical considerations, and their selection for specific applications.
Abstract: Active filtering of electric power has now become a mature technology for harmonic and reactive power compensation in two-wire (single phase), three-wire (three phase without neutral), and four-wire (three phase with neutral) AC power networks with nonlinear loads. This paper presents a comprehensive review of active filter (AF) configurations, control strategies, selection of components, other related economic and technical considerations, and their selection for specific applications. It is aimed at providing a broad perspective on the status of AF technology to researchers and application engineers dealing with power quality issues. A list of more than 200 research publications on the subject is also appended for a quick reference.

TL;DR: In this article, a decoupled double synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (DDSRF-PLL) was proposed to detect the fundamental-frequency positive-sequence component of the utility voltage under unbalanced and distorted conditions.
Abstract: This paper deals with a crucial aspect in the control of grid-connected power converters, i.e., the detection of the fundamental-frequency positive-sequence component of the utility voltage under unbalanced and distorted conditions. Specifically, it proposes a positive-sequence detector based on a new decoupled double synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (DDSRF-PLL), which completely eliminates the detection errors of conventional synchronous reference frame PLL's (SRF-PLL). This is achieved by transforming both positive- and negative-sequence components of the utility voltage into the double SRF, from which a decoupling network is developed in order to cleanly extract and separate the positive- and negative-sequence components. The resultant DDSRF-PLL conducts then to a fast, precise, and robust positive-sequence voltage detection even under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. The paper presents a detailed description and derivation of the proposed detection method, together with an extensive evaluation using simulation and experimental results from a digital signal processor-based laboratory prototype in order to verify and validate the excellent performance achieved by the DDSRF-PLL

TL;DR: In this paper, the modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) family based on cascade connection of multiple bidirectional chopper cells or single-phase full-bridge cells is classified from circuit configuration.
Abstract: This paper discusses the modular multilevel cascade converter (MMCC) family based on cascade connection of multiple bidirectional chopper cells or single-phase full-bridge cells. The MMCC family is classified from circuit configuration as follows: the single-star bridge cells (SSBC); the single-delta bridge cells (SDBC); the double-star chopper cells (DSCC); and the double-star bridge cells (DSBC). The term MMCC corresponds to a family name in a person while, for example, the term SSBC corresponds to a given name. Therefore, the term “MMCC-SSBC” can identify the circuit configuration without any confusion. Among the four MMCC family members, the SSBC and DSCC are more practical in cost, performance, and market than the others although a distinct difference exists in application between the SSBC and DSCC. This paper presents application examples of the SSBC to a battery energy storage system (BESS), the SDBC to a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for negative-sequence reactive-power control, and the DSCC to a motor drive for fans and blowers, along with their experimental results.

TL;DR: There has been considerable interest in the development and applications of active filters because of the increasing concern over power quality, at both distribution and consumer levels, and the need to control reactive power and voltage stability at transmission levels as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: There has been considerable interest in the development and applications of active filters because of the increasing concern over power quality, at both distribution and consumer levels, and the need to control reactive power and voltage stability at transmission levels. The existing approaches are classified and assessed to provide a framework of references for both researchers in this field and for generators, suppliers and consumers of electrical power who are, or may be, concerned about the problems associated with power quality and are considering installing active filters for their particular sets of problems.
