Occurrence, Biogenesis, and Synthesis of Biologically Active Carbazole Alkaloids

Privileged structures have been widely used as an effective template in medicinal chemistry for drug discovery. Chalcone is a common simple scaffold found in many naturally occurring compounds. Many chalcone derivatives have also been prepared due to their convenient synthesis. These natural products and synthetic compounds have shown numerous interesting biological activities with clinical potentials against various diseases. This review aims to highlight the recent evidence of chalcone as a privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry. Multiple aspects of chalcone will be summarized herein, including the isolation of novel chalcone derivatives, the development of new synthetic methodologies, the evaluation of their biological properties, and the exploration of the mechanisms of action as well as target identification. This review is expected to be a comprehensive, authoritative, and critical review of the chalcone template to the chemistry community.

Chalcone: A Privileged Structure in Medicinal Chemistry.

IT may occasion some surprise to those men of science who are ill-acquainted with India, and who so frequently express the view that Governments are unappreciative of the importance of science to learn that as far back as 1886 the Government of India arranged for Dr. George (later Sir George) Watt, professor of botany in the Presidency College, Calcutta, to prepare a "Dictionary of the Economic Products of India". The six volumes of this standard work were published during the years 1889-99. In 1908 Sir George Watt published a condensed version, "The Commercial Products of India". Whatever the defects of these 'dictionaries', they have been of inestimable value to all interested in Indian natural products. A New Pyranoxanthone from Calophyllum soulattri

A new abietene diterpene, kaempfolienol (5 S ,6 S ,7 S ,9 S ,10 S ,11 R ,13 S -abiet-8(14)-enepenta-6,7,9,11,13-ol, 1 ), was isolated from a rhizome extract of Kaempferia angustifolia Rosc. along with the known compounds crotepoxide, boesenboxide, zeylenol, 2′-hydroxy-4,4′,6′-trimethoxychalcone, (24 S )-24-methyl-5α-lanosta-9(11),25-dien-3β-ol, β-sitosterol and β-sitosterol-3- O -β- D -glucopyranoside. The structures of all compounds were elucidated on the basis of mass spectroscopic and NMR data. Zeylenol ( 2 ), the major constituent of the plant, was derivatized into diacetate, triacetate and epoxide derivatives through standard organic reactions. The cytotoxic activity of compounds 1 , 2 and the zeylenol derivatives was evaluated against the HL-60, MCF-7, HT-29 and HeLa cell lines. A New Abietene Diterpene and Other Constituents from Kaempferia angustifolia Rosc.

Extraction and chromatographic separation of the extracts of dried stem barks of Glycosmis macrantha lead to isolation of two new acridone alkaloids, macranthanine and 7-hydroxynoracronycine, and a known acridone, atalaphyllidine. The structures of these alkaloids were determined by detailed spectral analysis and also by comparison with reported data.

The use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides to control insect and weed pests has posed substantial problems due to
their persistence in the environment, insect resistance and high mammalian toxicity. On the other hand. plant-de1ived
insecticide are more readily biodegraded, less likely to contaminate the environment and less toxic to non target
organism.s. Hence, the search for new sources of such compounds from plants has gained popularity amongst
researchers. A screening procedure far the presence of bioactive compounds from plant sources by using brim: shrimp
as the general bio assay has been can;ed out and a number of plant species has been identified for further detailed
studies. The crude extracts and purified samples were further tested using other more specific bioassay methods.

Screening of Tropical Plants for the Presence of Bioactive Compounds

Toxicity studies of several local plant extracts on insects and fish were carried out. The volatile fraction of some of
plant extracts was isolated and the major components were characterized. The contact insecticidal activity and the
toxicity test of the plant extract on fishes were studied.
