TL;DR: A heuristic approach based on PB solvers and a complete multi-objective PB solver based on a backtracking algorithm that incorporates the non-dominance relation from multi-Objective optimization and is restricted to linear objective functions are proposed.
Abstract: Nowadays many design space exploration tools are based on Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs). Beside the advantages of MOEAs, there is one important drawback as MOEAs might fail in design spaces containing only a few feasible solutions or as they are often afflicted with premature convergence, i.e., the same design points are revisited again and again. Exact methods, especially Pseudo Boolean solvers (PB solvers) seem to be a solution. However, as typical design spaces are multi-objective, there is a need for multi-objective PB solvers. In this paper, we will formalize the problem of design space exploration as multi-objective 0--1 ILP. We will propose (1) a heuristic approach based on PB solvers and (2) a complete multi-objective PB solver based on a backtracking algorithm that incorporates the non-dominance relation from multi-objective optimization and is restricted to linear objective functions. First results from applying our novel multi-objective PB solver to synthetic problems will show its effectiveness in small sized design spaces as well as in large design spaces only containing a few feasible solutions. For non-linear and large problems, the proposed heuristic approach is outperforming common MOEA approaches. Finally, a real world example from the automotive area will emphasize the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

TL;DR: This paper presented a novel approach that considers reliability with all other design objectives simultaneously simultaneously, an evaluation technique that is able to perform a quantitative analysis in reasonable time even for real-world applications, and experimental results showing the effectiveness of the approach.
Abstract: Increasing reliability is one of the most important design goals for current and future embedded systems. In this paper, we will put focus on the design phase in which reliability constitutes one of several competing design objectives. Existing approaches considered the simultaneous optimization of reliability with other objectives to be too extensive. Hence, they firstly design a system, secondly analyze the system for reliability and finally exchange critical parts or introduce redundancy in order to satisfy given reliability constraints or optimize reliability. Unfortunately, this may lead to suboptimal designs concerning other design objectives. Here, we presented: a) a novel approach that considers reliability with all other design objectives simultaneously, b) an evaluation technique that is able to perform a quantitative analysis in reasonable time even for real-world applications, and c) experimental results showing the effectiveness of our approach

TL;DR: A transformation of the transaction level model to a graph-based model and symbolic representation that allows multi-objective optimization is presented and results from optimizing a motion-JPEG decoder illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel design space exploration approach is proposed that enables a concurrent optimization of the topology, the process binding, and the communication routing of a system. Given an application model written in SystemC TLM 2.0, the proposed approach performs a fully automatic optimization by a simultaneous resource allocation, task binding, data mapping, and transaction routing for MPSoC platforms. To cope with the huge complexity of the design space, a transformation of the transaction level model to a graph-based model and symbolic representation that allows multi-objective optimization is presented. Results from optimizing a Motion-JPEG decoder illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

TL;DR: The experimental evaluation shows that existing approaches may produce infeasible outcomes and are thus not applicable for predictable application execution, while the proposed approach enables predictable and efficient run-time management of dynamic application mixes.
Abstract: Future many-core systems are envisaged to support the concurrent execution of varying mixes of different applications. Because of the vast number of binding options for such mixes on heterogeneous resources, enabling predictable application execution is far from trivial. Hybrid application mapping is an efficient way of achieving run-time predictability by combining design-time analysis of application mappings with run-time management. Existing hybrid mapping strategies focus on computation resources and either ignore communication details or make significantly simplifying assumptions like unlimited bandwidth or exclusive usage. But, actual many-core systems consist of constrained and shared computation and communication resources where the run-time decision of whether a feasible application binding on a set of preoccupied resources exists or not is an NP-complete problem. As a remedy, we present a novel hybrid application mapping approach that considers constrained shared communication and computation resources. Here, (a) a design space exploration coupled with a formal performance analysis delivers several resource reservation configurations with verified real-time guarantees for each individual application. The configurations are then transformed to (b) a novel efficient intermediate representation that is passed to the run-time management where we (c) formulate run-time resource reservation and application binding as a constraint satisfaction problem and present an adequate solving mechanism. Our experimental evaluation shows that existing approaches may produce infeasible outcomes and are thus not applicable for predictable application execution, while the proposed approach enables predictable and efficient run-time management of dynamic application mixes.

TL;DR: This paper proposes a novel methodology to obtain feasible solutions from constrained discrete problems in population- based optimization heuristics and shows in detail how this methodology is implemented in Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms.
Abstract: For complex optimization problems, several population-based heuristics like Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms have been developed. These algorithms are aiming to deliver sufficiently good solutions in an acceptable time. However, for discrete problems that are restricted by several constraints it is mostly a hard problem to even find a single feasible solution. In these cases, the optimization heuristics typically perform poorly as they mainly focus on searching feasible solutions rather than optimizing the objectives. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology to obtain feasible solutions from constrained discrete problems in population- based optimization heuristics. At this juncture, the constraints have to be converted into the Prepositional Satisfiability Problem (SAT). Obtaining a feasible solution is done by the DPLL algorithm which is the core of most modern SAT solvers. It is shown in detail how this methodology is implemented in Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithms. The SAT solver is used to obtain feasible solutions from the genetic encoded information on arbitrarily hard solvable problems where common methods like penalty functions or repair strategies are failing. Handmade test cases are used to compare various configurations of the SAT solver. On an industrial example, the proposed methodology is compared to common strategies which are used to obtain feasible solutions.

Abstract: High-performance parallel computer architecture and systems have been improved at a phenomenal rate. In the meantime, VLSI computer-aided design (CAD) software for multibillion-transistor IC design has become increasingly complex and requires prohibitively high computational resources. Recent studies have shown that, numerous CAD problems, with their high computational complexity, can greatly benefit from the fast-increasing parallel computation capabilities. However, parallel programming imposes big challenges for CAD applications. Fully exploiting the computational power of emerging general-purpose and domain-specific multicore/many-core processor systems, calls for fundamental research and engineering practice across every stage of parallel CAD design, from algorithm exploration, programming models, design-time and run-time environment, to CAD applications, such as verification, optimization, and simulation. This journal special section will cover recent progress on parallel CAD research, including algorithm foundations, programming models, parallel architectural-specific optimization, and verification. More specifically, papers with in-depth and extensive coverage of the following topics will be considered, as well as other topics relevant to the design of parallel CAD algorithms and software tools. 1. Parallel algorithm design and specification for CAD applications 2. Parallel programming models and languages of particular use in CAD 3. Runtime support and performance optimization for CAD applications 4. Parallel architecture-specific design and optimization for CAD applications 5. Parallel program debugging and verification techniques particularly relevant for CAD The papers should be submitted via the Manuscript Central website and should adhere to standard ACM TODAES formatting requirements (http://todaes.acm.org/). TL;DR: This paper presents major achievements of two decades of research on methods and tools for hardware/software codesign by starting with a historical survey of its roots, highlighting its major research directions and achievements until today, and predicting in which direction research in codesign might evolve in the decades to come.
Abstract: Hardware/software codesign investigates the concurrent design of hardware and software components of complex electronic systems. It tries to exploit the synergy of hardware and software with the goal to optimize and/or satisfy design constraints such as cost, performance, and power of the final product. At the same time, it targets to reduce the time-to-market frame considerably. This paper presents major achievements of two decades of research on methods and tools for hardware/software codesign by starting with a historical survey of its roots, by highlighting its major research directions and achievements until today, and finally, by predicting in which direction research in codesign might evolve in the decades to come.

Abstract: Due to significant industrial demands toward software systems with increasing complexity and challenging quality requirements, software architecture design has become an important development activity and the research domain is rapidly evolving. In the last decades, software architecture optimization methods, which aim to automate the search for an optimal architecture design with respect to a (set of) quality attribute(s), have proliferated. However, the reported results are fragmented over different research communities, multiple system domains, and multiple quality attributes. To integrate the existing research results, we have performed a systematic literature review and analyzed the results of 188 research papers from the different research communities. Based on this survey, a taxonomy has been created which is used to classify the existing research. Furthermore, the systematic analysis of the research literature provided in this review aims to help the research community in consolidating the existing research efforts and deriving a research agenda for future developments.
