From Ionic Currents to Molecular Mechanisms: The Structure and Function of Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels

The interaction between an electronically excited photocatalyst and an organic molecule can result in the genertion of a diverse array of reactive intermediates that can be manipulated in a variety of ways to result in synthetically useful bond constructions. This Review summarizes dual-catalyst strategies that have been applied to synthetic photochemistry. Mechanistically distinct modes of photocatalysis are discussed, including photoinduced electron transfer, hydrogen atom transfer, and energy transfer. We focus upon the cooperative interactions of photocatalysts with redox mediators, Lewis and Bronsted acids, organocatalysts, enzymes, and transition metal complexes.

Dual Catalysis Strategies in Photochemical Synthesis

Tetrathiafulvalenes, oligoacenenes, and their buckminsterfullerene derivatives: the brick and mortar of organic electronics.

Since the early development of this technology in the 1970s, TiO2 constitutes the archetypical photocatalyst due to its relatively high efficiency, low cost and availability. However, during the last decade a considerable number of new photocatalytic materials, either semiconductor or not, have been proposed as potential substitutes of TiO2, particularly in the case of solar applications, for which this standard photocatalyst is not very suitable because of its wide band gap. Semiconductors based on cations with d0 configuration such Ta5+ or Nb5+, as well as oxides or nitrides of d10 elements such as Bi3+, In3+ or Ga3+ are among the most successful novel photocatalysts, but non-semiconductor solids like cation-interchanged zeolites also produce interesting results. In addition, some classical semiconductors like ZnO or CdS, initially discarded as a consequence of their poor stability under irradiation, have been reconsidered as feasible photocatalysts for particular applications. This growing body of data requires new analysis of the challenges and opportunities facing photocatalysis in order to assess which of the photoactive materials are best for each particular application. In this review, we summarize, with an historical perspective, the main achievements obtained with photocatalyst alternatives to TiO2 in the three main niches for this technology: water splitting for hydrogen production, decontamination and disinfection processes, and organic synthesis.

Radical reactions of fullerenes: from synthetic organic chemistry to materials science and biology.

In view of its unique photocatalytic properties, decatungstate (W10O324−) is rapidly emerging as a promising tool in organic chemistry. This tutorial review surveys recent developments in the chemistry of decatungstate, including mostly synthetic, and to a lesser extent mechanistic aspects. We have chosen to present several representative examples that illustrate the diverse uses of decatungstate in organic synthesis. Thus, the decatungstate-mediated radical functionalization of several classes of organic compounds such as alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes and sulfides, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, represents reactions of fundamental and practical interest in academia and industry. Several new discoveries concerning the heterogenization of decatungstate for the development of sustainable methods with broad applications in catalysis, such as the photooxidation or photodegradation of various organic substrates, are also presented.

Stereochemical studies on [2 + 2] photoaddition of cis-/trans-4-propenylanisole (cis-1 and trans-1) and cis-1-(p-methoxyphenyl)ethylene-2-d(1) (cis-3-d(1)) to C(60) exhibit stereospecificity in favor of the trans-2 cycloadduct in the former case and nonstereoselectivity in the latter. The observed stereoselectivity in favor of the cis-6-d(3) [2 + 2] diastereomer by 12% in the case of the photochemical addition of (E)-1-(p-methoxyphenyl)-2-methyl-prop-1-ene-3,3,3-d(3) (trans-5-d(3)) to C(60) is attributed to a steric kinetic isotope effect (k(H)/k(D) = 0.78). The loss of stereochemistry in the cyclobutane ring excludes a concerted addition and is consistent with a stepwise mechanism. Intermolecular secondary kinetic isotope effects of the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of 3-d(0) vs 3-d(1), and 3-d(6) as well as 5-d(0) vs 5-d(1), and 5-d(6) to C(60) were also measured. The intermolecular competition due to deuterium substitution of both vinylic hydrogens at the beta-carbon of 3 exhibits a substantial inverse alpha-secondary isotope effect k(H)/k(D) = 0.83 (per deuterium). Substitution with deuterium at both vinylic methyl groups of 5 yields a small inverse k(H)/k(D) = 0. 94. These results are consistent with the formation of an open intermediate in the rate-determining step.

Mechanism of the

Open-cage fullerene derivatives have excited organic chemists’ creativity over the past decade. These adducts, generated via consecutive cleavage of σ- and π-carbon–carbon bonds on the fullerene cage, allow small atoms or molecules to pass through their opening and be placed inside the cavity. Restoration of the ruptured fullerene back to the pristine fullerene cage affords the corresponding endohedral complexes. This “molecular surgery” approach has been proposed as an alternative to the synthesis of endohedral fullerenes via the conventional physical methods of production, which restrict the availability of endohedral fullerenes to milligram quantities after laborious isolation procedures. In this critical review, we survey all published techniques for the creation of an orifice, as well as for the expansion of an existing one, on the fullerene framework. Successful encapsulation experiments employing cage-opened fullerene derivatives are also comprehensively discussed (160 references).
