João Luiz Costa Cardoso,Hui Wen Fan,F.O.S. França,Miguel Tanús Jorge,R. P. Leite,Sérgio de Andrade Nishioka,A. Avila,Ida S. Sano-Martins,S. C. Tomy,Marcelo L. Santoro,A M Chudzinski,S.C.B. Castro,A.S. Kamiguti,E. M. A. Kelen,Mario Hiroyuki Hirata,R. M. S. Mirandola,R.D.G. Theakston,David A. Warrell +17 more

Journal ArticleDOI
Snake bites by the jararacuçu (Bothrops jararacussu): clinicopathological studies of 29 proven cases in São Paulo State, Brazil
R. Milani Junior,Miguel Tanús Jorge,F P de Campos,F P Martins,A Bousso,João Luiz Costa Cardoso,L A Ribeiro,Hui Wen Fan,F.O.S. França,Ida S. Sano-Martins,D.F. Cardoso,C Ide Fernandez,J C Fernandes,Vera Lucia Aldred,M P Sandoval,Giuseppe Puorto,R.D.G. Theakston,David A. Warrell +17 more
TL;DR: Examination of proven jararacuçu bites recruited over a 20-year period in two São Paulo hospitals found effects of polyspecific Bothrops antivenom were not impressive, and it has been suggested that anti-Bothrops and anti-Crotalus antivenoms should be given in combination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Óbitos por serpentes peçonhentas no Estado de São Paulo: avaliação de 43 casos, 1988/93
L A Ribeiro,M. J. Albuquerque,V. A.F. Pires de Campos,G. Katz,N.Y. Takaoka,Maria Lúcia Lebrão,Miguel Tanús Jorge +6 more

Journal ArticleDOI
Failure of chloramphenicol prophylaxis to reduce the frequency of abscess formation as a complication of envenoming by Bothrops snakes in Brazil: a double-blind randomized controlled trial
Miguel Tanús Jorge,Ceila Maria Sant’Ana Malaque,L A Ribeiro,Hui Wen Fan,João Luiz Costa Cardoso,Sérgio de Andrade Nishioka,Ida S. Sano-Martins,Francisco Oscar de Siqueira França,Aura S. Kamiguti,R.D.G. Theakston,David A. Warrell,David A. Warrell +11 more
TL;DR: The use of orally-administered chloramphenicol for victims of Bothrops snake bite with signs of local envenoming on admission, is not effective for the prevention of local infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Aeromonas hydrophila soft-tissue infection as a complication of snake bite: report of three cases
TL;DR: Chloramphenicol appears to be a good alternative for the empirical treatment of soft-tissue infection complicating snake bite in Brazil, because: it is active against the majority of the anaerobic and aerobic bacteria found in these abscesses, including A. hydrophila; it can be administered by the oral route; and its is inexpensive.
