The basic premise of Dr. Carin Bondar’s Nature of Human Nature is that human behavior and intentions and the adaptive strategies of ants, birds, spiders, nonhuman primates, and fish can illuminate one another. After a brief introduction explaining natural selection and introducing the question, Are humans a part of nature?, Dr. Bondar puts this premise to work in a series of vignettes that are divided into two main parts, “survive” and “reproduce.” These are further subdivided into chapters, each of which focuses on a different aspect of survival or reproduction. Each chapter consists of twoto three-page unnumbered sections, each of which centers upon a different animal behavior. Dr. Bondar focuses on kinds of behaviors that might seem to us to be especially characteristic of our species, or perhaps unique to us. For example, surely there cannot be, in the animal world, behavior analogous to the human institution of dietary supplements and professional advice from dietitians and scientists? Dr. Bondar addresses this issue in “oxidatively stressed” (p. 50). No doubt human abilities such as reasoning and careful observation are required to discover that certain fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants, believed to fight cancer and even aging itself. One important point that a dietitian would want to make to a patient is that fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants are dark in color, purples and dark blues having the highest levels. Not only can scientists discover what nutrients are good for us but they also can help guide us to those foods with that simple rule.

Human, All Too Human

It seems logical to assume that substantive changes in history should lead to shifts in emphasis in the preoccupations of politically engaged literature. After all, such literature usually erects history as an a priori structure. For this reason forms of social realism have usually been favored by politically engaged fiction writers in the South African context. During the apartheid period, Nadine Gordimer treated with suspicion the \"disestablishment from the temporal\" that results from the modernist attempt to \"transform the world by style\"; she concluded that the \"essential gesture\" of the white South African writer \"can be fulfilled only in the integrity Chekhov demanded: 'to describe a situation so truthfully [. . .] that the reader can no longer evade it'\" (248–50). Secretary of the Invisible: The Idea of Hospitality in the Fiction of J. M. Coetzee

The Population Registration Act of 1950, in the apartheid period of South African history, defined a coloured person as “a person who is not a White person or a Black”. In differentiating coloured from white, coloured from black, and black from white, somatic appearance obviously played a crucial role. So, for instance, a white person was defined as “a person who (a) in appearance obviously is a White person, and who is not generally accepted as a Coloured person; or (b) is generally accepted as a White person and is not in appearance obviously not a White person”.1 It follows that the body of the individual was read as a signifier of racial identity, a hermeneutic practice still prevalent in present-day South Africa. My argument in this essay is that Zoë Wicomb’s David’s Story2 shows how the trope of “pure blood” in the discourse of race not only reduces the body of the individual coloured person to a material sign of racial difference, but also inscribes a history of shame on that body. In developing this argument, I examine Wicomb’s treatment of the problem of representing colouredness. The seemingly aporetic question which her novel poses is: how does one represent coloured people without endorsing the aesthetic of blood which constructs colouredness? As the novel’s engagement with Griqua history indicates, this is not simply a literary question, but one which pertains to all narrative figurations of coloured identity. Finally, I contend that Wicomb responds to this question by considering the impossibility of representing the body in the absence of discourse.

Bastards and Bodies in Zoe Wicomb's 'David's Story'

In The Restless Supermarket (2001), Ivan Vladislavic invests Aubrey Tearle, his first-person narrator, with a hermeneutic sensibility. This is, of course, evident in the fact that Tearle is a proofreader, albeit a retired one, who is dedicated "to matter in its proper order" (42), and whose principal aim in life is "to determine species of error, and to assist in eliminating them" (64). In this endeavour, he assumes that his linguistic standards are absolute and indisputable, rather than arbitrary and conventional and therefore provisional and contingent. Tearle's obsession with standards is not purely linguistic, though. Throughout the novel, Vladislavic collapses the distinction between his protagonist's linguistic proofreading and his social proofreading, that is, the obsessive manner in which Tearle detects 'errors' in the world around him as he goes about his daily business. In doing the latter, Tearle exemplifies the hermeneutic syndrome outlined in the epigraph to Part One of the novel, drawn from William Hazlitt: "He reads the world . . . like an edition of some old work which he is preparing for the press, only to make emendations in it, and correct the errors that have inadvertently slipt in." In the narrative itself, this form of social reading is evident not only in Tearle's interactions with his companions at the Cafe Europa, whom he routinely "proofreads" (41), but also (and more obviously), in what he calls the "big 'clean-up'" (83) or his "public-service proofreading" (107), which involves detecting language
