Uniform requirements for medical journals - An idea whose time has come?

Abstract: Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals have been developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal editors. Authors are an important part of the journal but their perspective is often ignored. Certain journals from developing countries have problems with manuscript submission, review and publication process. Uniform requirements for medical journals to deal with manuscripts are urgently required. The authors put forward a reasonable time frame for various stages in the publishing process and discuss methods in which journals from developing countries can streamline and expedite the publication process.

Workshop on proposal writing on research for health care professionals: a brief report

Abstract: A one-day workshop on proposal writing for research for health care professionals was organized by Hospital Research Board (HRB), Nepal Cancer Hospital and Research Center Pvt. Ltd, Harisiddhi, Lalitpur, Nepal on 2nd March 2019. The main aim of this workshop was to identify, motivate and prepare health care professionals for conducting research in their respective professional institution in collaboration. The workshop was facilitated by international and national resource persons. The deliberations of the workshop were focused on seven topics: "Turning research into impact, Essentials of the research protocol, Why proposals are rejected?, Plagiarism in medical research, Research with medical records, Grant writing workshop, Manuscript writing workshop" based on a presentation by the different resource persons. Ninety-nine persons participated in the workshop including physicians, medical oncologists, pharmacists, nurses and other allied health professionals. The interactive teaching-learning methods were utilized in all sessions of the workshop. The feedback of the participants was taken on semi-structured feedback format. Overall evaluations from the feedback forms showed that majority (90%) of the participants agreed that the workshop achieved its objectives with a major recommendation as to the allocation of short duration for the workshop and timely organize of research activities regarding scientific writing. In conclusion, the workshop on research proposal writing for health care professionals was successfully organized and the participants are looking forward for future ones.

Abstract: Basophils are the least abundant of peripheral blood leukocytes and have long been associated with myeloproliferative disorders 1 .Data suggests that varied causes of basophilia are commonly overlooked. This article aims to provide an overview of basophilia and its associated causes. Basophils are multifunctional haematopoeitic cells primarily produced in the bone marrow. After maturation, they reside in the circulation until recruited into tissue at sites of inflammation. They number upto 0.1x10 9 /L of blood.

An urgent need to strengthen medical journals in South Asia

Abstract: Medical journals published in South Asia and other developing regions encounter many challenges. Often authors do not perceive that they have received a fair deal from the journals. In this article the author puts forward a few suggestions to strengthen medical journals in South Asia and also other developing regions.

Writing scientific theses/dissertations in biology field: confusing in using abstract and summary term

Abstract: W the abstract in a thesis, a dissertation and in a scientific paper is of a great importance to condense the contents in well readable and self expressible short text. The abstract should give a real, precise, accurate and satisfied picture for the entire scientific article. Two terms (abstract and summary) were used widely by Iraqi biological sciences postgraduate students as the first chapter in their theses and dissertations writing. These both terms usually are different in their context writing style and in their content. It is supposed that abstract should be used in the writing of scientific articles, thesis or dissertation instead of summary. This study hypothesized that those students have no knowledge and skill to differentiate between abstract and summary terms in their writing process. This study involved reading and analyzing of 124 thesis and dissertations from different biological disciplines and involved also interviewing 114 postgraduate students to uncover the accuracy of using those two terms and to have proper idea about their knowledge in abstract writing guidelines. The results revealed that most students didn’t differentiate between abstract and summary in their writing, no abstract was written correctly indicating that the students lacked the knowledge and skill of abstract writing guidelines. The students did write their abstract by blindly mimic the previous students writing style without any attempt to check the accuracy of writing process. Reconsideration for postgraduate students’ syllabus must be taken to establish rigid system for scientific writing based on international guidelines.

SciPub–019–Getting Your Article Published in Scientific Journals- an Event Report

Abstract: Introduction The quantity and quality of published research from Nepal, though improving, are low. Among other factors, lack of knowledge about scientific writing is an important contributor. Thus, with the objective of improving knowledge about scientific writing, a one-day workshop was conducted, entitled, "SciPub-019-Getting your article published in scientific journals". Methods The knowledge and attitude of participants were evaluated both before and immediately after the workshop. Results Thirty-three individuals participated with most (48.5%) being pharmacists, followed closely by doctors. 66.7% of the participants were males and 72.7% of participants had published one article as of the workshop date while the rest had published two. On specific questions, there was a significant difference between the responses regarding the abstract being the first part of the paper to be written, before and after the workshop. There was also a significant difference between the overall responses of the participants. Conclusion Improvement in the knowledge of the participants about scientific writing and publication was noted. Workshops of similar nature should be regularly conducted to improve the knowledge of new researchers about scientific writing.
