TL;DR: It is suggested that charged groups in the host resins improve the dispersion of embedded nanoparticles and enhance the reactivity and capacity for sorption of metal ions.
Abstract: A novel hybrid nanomaterial was fabricated by encapsulating ZrO2 nanoparticles into spherical polystyrene beads (MPS) covalently bound with charged sulfonate groups (−SO3–). The resultant adsorbent, Zr–MPS, exhibited more preferential sorption toward Pb(II) than the simple equivalent mixture of MPS and ZrO2. Such observation might be ascribed to the presence of sulfonate groups of the polymeric host, which could enhance nano-ZrO2 dispersion and Pb(II) diffusion kinetics. To further elucidate the role of surface functional groups, we encapsulated nano-ZrO2 onto another two macroporous polystyrene with different surface groups (i.e., −N(CH3)3+/–CH2Cl, respectively) and a conventional activated carbon. The three obtained nanocomposites were denoted as Zr–MPN, Zr–MPC, and Zr–GAC. The presence of −SO3– and −N(CH3)3+ was more favorable for nano-ZrO2 dispersion than the neutral −CH2Cl, resulting in the sequence of sorption capacities as Zr–MPS > Zr–MPN > Zr–GAC > Zr–MPC. Column Pb(II) sorption by the four nanoco...

TL;DR: The superior performance of NZP was attributed to the Donnan membrane effect exerted by the host D-001 as well as the impregnated HZO nanoparticles of specific interaction toward toxic metals, as confirmed by the comparative isothermal adsorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study.
Abstract: To overcome the technical bottleneck of fine hydrated Zr(IV) oxide particles in environmental remediation, we irreversibly impregnated nanosized hydrated Zr(IV) oxide inside a commercial cation exchange resin D-001 and obtained a new nanocomposite NZP. NZP exhibited efficient removal of lead and cadmium ions in a pH range of 2–6, where no Zr(IV) leaching was detected from NZP. As compared to D-001, NZP showed more preferable adsorption toward both toxic metals from the background Ca(II) solution at greater levels. The synthetic Pb(II) or Cd(II) solution containing other ubiquitous metal ions was employed as the feeding influent for column adsorption, and the results indicated that the treatable volume of NZP is around 3–4 times that of D-001 before reaching the breakthrough point set according to the effluent discharge standard of China. With respect to Pb(II) removal from an acidic mining effluent, the treatable volume of NZP was 13 times higher than that of D-001. The exhausted NZP could be effectively ...

TL;DR: Experimental and computational studies suggest that the sorption behavior is related to the hydroxyl groups in activated Ti sites, where Pb(II) ion exchange is facilitated by the formation of a hexagonal potential trap.
Abstract: The functional groups and site interactions on the surfaces of two-dimensional (2D) layered titanium carbide can be tailored to attain some extraordinary physical properties. Herein a 2D alk-MXene (Ti3C2(OH/ONa)xF2–x) material, prepared by chemical exfoliation followed by alkalization intercalation, exhibits preferential Pb(II) sorption behavior when competing cations (Ca(II)/Mg(II)) coexisted at high levels. Kinetic tests show that the sorption equilibrium is achieved in as short a time as 120 s. Attractively, the alk-MXene presents efficient Pb(II) uptake performance with the applied sorption capacities of 4500 kg water per alk-MXene, and the effluent Pb(II) contents are below the drinking water standard recommended by the World Health Organization (10 μg/L). Experimental and computational studies suggest that the sorption behavior is related to the hydroxyl groups in activated Ti sites, where Pb(II) ion exchange is facilitated by the formation of a hexagonal potential trap.

TL;DR: The current state-of-the-art of available technologies for water purification are reviewed and their field of application for heavy metal ion removal is discussed, as heavy metal ions are the most harmful and widespread contaminants.
Abstract: Water pollution is a global problem threatening the entire biosphere and affecting the life of many millions of people around the world. Not only is water pollution one of the foremost global risk factors for illness, diseases and death, but it also contributes to the continuous reduction of the available drinkable water worldwide. Delivering valuable solutions, which are easy to implement and affordable, often remains a challenge. Here we review the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for water purification and discuss their field of application for heavy metal ion removal, as heavy metal ions are the most harmful and widespread contaminants. We consider each technology in the context of sustainability, a largely neglected key factor, which may actually play a pivotal role in the implementation of each technology in real applications, and we introduce a compact index, the Ranking Efficiency Product (REP), to evaluate the efficiency and ease of implementation of the various technologies in this broader perspective. Emerging technologies, for which a detailed quantitative analysis and assessment is not yet possible according to this methodology, either due to scarcity or inhomogeneity of data, are discussed in the final part of the manuscript.

TL;DR: A review of membrane filtration, ion exchange, ion-exchange, adsorption, chemical precipitation, nanotechnology treatments, electrochemical and advanced oxidation processes are discussed in this article.
Abstract: Heavy metals like arsenic, copper, cadmium, chromium, nickel, zinc, lead, and mercury are major pollutants of fresh water reservoirs because of their toxic, non-biodegradable, and persistent nature. The industrial growth is the major source of heavy metals introducing such pollutants into different segments of the environment including air, water, soil, and biosphere. Heavy metals are easily absorbed by fishes and vegetables due to their high solubility in the aquatic environments. Hence, they may accumulate in the human body by means of the food chain. Various methods have been developed and used for water and wastewater treatment to decrease heavy metal concentrations. These technologies include membrane filtration, ion-exchange, adsorption, chemical precipitation, nanotechnology treatments, electrochemical and advanced oxidation processes. In this review, the methods as well as their mechanisms and efficiency are discussed.
