Introduction to Recommender Systems Handbook

Recommender systems have the effect of guiding users in a personal- ized way to interesting objects in a large space of possible options. Content-based recommendation systems try to recommend items similar to those a given user has liked in the past. Indeed, the basic process performed by a content-based recom- mender consists in matching up the attributes of a user profile in which preferences and interests are stored, with the attributes of a content object (item), in order to recommend to the user new interesting items. This chapter provides an overview of content-based recommender systems, with the aim of imposing a degree of order on the diversity of the different aspects involved in their design and implementation. The first part of the chapter presents the basic concepts and terminology of content- based recommender systems, a high level architecture, and their main advantages and drawbacks. The second part of the chapter provides a review of the state of the art of systems adopted in several application domains, by thoroughly describ- ing both classical and advanced techniques for representing items and user profiles. The most widely adopted techniques for learning user profiles are also presented. The last part of the chapter discusses trends and future research which might lead towards the next generation of systems, by describing the role of User Generated Content as a way for taking into account evolving vocabularies, and the challenge of feeding users with serendipitous recommendations, that is to say surprisingly interesting items that they might not have otherwise discovered.

Content-based Recommender Systems: State of the Art and Trends

A recommender system aims to provide users with personalized online product or service recommendations to handle the increasing online information overload problem and improve customer relationship management. Various recommender system techniques have been proposed since the mid-1990s, and many sorts of recommender system software have been developed recently for a variety of applications. Researchers and managers recognize that recommender systems offer great opportunities and challenges for business, government, education, and other domains, with more recent successful developments of recommender systems for real-world applications becoming apparent. It is thus vital that a high quality, instructive review of current trends should be conducted, not only of the theoretical research results but more importantly of the practical developments in recommender systems. This paper therefore reviews up-to-date application developments of recommender systems, clusters their applications into eight main categories: e-government, e-business, e-commerce/e-shopping, e-library, e-learning, e-tourism, e-resource services and e-group activities, and summarizes the related recommendation techniques used in each category. It systematically examines the reported recommender systems through four dimensions: recommendation methods (such as CF), recommender systems software (such as BizSeeker), real-world application domains (such as e-business) and application platforms (such as mobile-based platforms). Some significant new topics are identified and listed as new directions. By providing a state-of-the-art knowledge, this survey will directly support researchers and practical professionals in their understanding of developments in recommender system applications. Research papers on various recommender system applications are summarized.The recommender systems are examined systematically through four dimensions.The recommender system applications are classified into eight categories.Related recommendation techniques in each category are identified.Several new recommendation techniques and application areas are uncovered.

Recommender system application developments

One-mode projecting is extensively used to compress bipartite networks. Since one-mode projection is always less informative than the bipartite representation, a proper weighting method is required to better retain the original information. In this article, inspired by the network-based resource-allocation dynamics, we raise a weighting method which can be directly applied in extracting the hidden information of networks, with remarkably better performance than the widely used global ranking method as well as collaborative filtering. This work not only provides a creditable method for compressing bipartite networks, but also highlights a possible way for the better solution of a long-standing challenge in modern information science: How to do a personal recommendation.

Recently, Artificial Intelligence techniques have proved useful in helping users to handle the large amount of information on the Internet. The idea of personalized search engines, intelligent software agents, and recommender systems has been widely accepted among users who require assistance in searching, sorting, classifying, filtering and sharing this vast quantity of information. In this paper, we present a state-of-the-art taxonomy of intelligent recommender agents on the Internet. We have analyzed 37 different systems and their references and have sorted them into a list of 8 basic dimensions. These dimensions are then used to establish a taxonomy under which the systems analyzed are classified. Finally, we conclude this paper with a cross-dimensional analysis with the aim of providing a starting point for researchers to construct their own recommender system.

Many researchers have focused their efforts on developing collaborative recommender systems. It has been proved that the use of collaboration in such systems improves performance, but what is not known is how this collaboration is done and what is more important, how it has to be done in order to optimise the information exchange. The collaborative relationships in recommender systems can be represented as a social network. In this paper we propose several measures to analyse collaboration based on social network analysis. Once these measures are explained, we use them to evaluate a concrete example of collaboration in a real recommender system.

Opinion-Based Filtering through Trust

Emotions are crucial for user's decision making in recommendation processes. We first introduce ambient recommender systems, which arise from the analysis of new trends on the exploitation of the emotional context in the next generation of recommender systems. We then explain some results of these new trends in real-world applications through the smart prediction assistant (SPA) platform in an intelligent learning guide with more than three million users. While most approaches to recommending have focused on algorithm performance. SPA makes recommendations to users on the basis of emotional information acquired in an incremental way. This article provides a cross-disciplinary perspective to achieve this goal in such recommender systems through a SPA platform. The methodology applied in SPA is the result of a bunch of technology transfer projects for large real-world rccommender systems.

Trust is one of the most important social concepts that helps human agents to cope with their social environment and is present in all human interaction. Like in real world, agents should rely in some agents and mistrust in other ones to achieve a purpose. In this paper we develop a model of trust in the collaborative world as a new approach of recommender agents development. Mainly, we provide recommender agents with a technology to look for similar agents that advice him. The model presented comprehends the evolution of trust, that is, trust dynamics. Moreover, the model proposed emphasizes proactiveness since the agent looks for other agents in a lack for information situation instead of remaining passive or providing either a negative or empty answer to the user.
