TL;DR: This study presents an approach of the voltage regulation of DC bus for the photovoltaic energy storage by using a combination of batteries and supercapacitors (SCs), and the validation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
Abstract: This study presents an approach of the voltage regulation of DC bus for the photovoltaic energy storage by using a combination of batteries and supercapacitors (SCs). The batteries are used to meet the energy requirements for a relatively long duration, whereas the SCs are used to meet the instantaneous power demand. The energy management strategy is developed to manage the power flows between the storage devices by choosing the optimal operating mode, thereby to ensuring the continuous supply of the load by maintaining the state-of-charge (SoC) of SCs (SoC sc ) and the SoC of the batteries (SoC bat ) at acceptable levels. This energy management strategy is performed by using the fuzzy logic supervisor. The validation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

TL;DR: From the experience of several industrial trials on smart grid with communication infrastructures, it is expected that the traditional carbon fuel based power plants can cooperate with emerging distributed renewable energy such as wind, solar, etc, to reduce the carbon fuel consumption and consequent green house gas such as carbon dioxide emission.
Abstract: A communication infrastructure is an essential part to the success of the emerging smart grid. A scalable and pervasive communication infrastructure is crucial in both construction and operation of a smart grid. In this paper, we present the background and motivation of communication infrastructures in smart grid systems. We also summarize major requirements that smart grid communications must meet. From the experience of several industrial trials on smart grid with communication infrastructures, we expect that the traditional carbon fuel based power plants can cooperate with emerging distributed renewable energy such as wind, solar, etc, to reduce the carbon fuel consumption and consequent green house gas such as carbon dioxide emission. The consumers can minimize their expense on energy by adjusting their intelligent home appliance operations to avoid the peak hours and utilize the renewable energy instead. We further explore the challenges for a communication infrastructure as the part of a complex smart grid system. Since a smart grid system might have over millions of consumers and devices, the demand of its reliability and security is extremely critical. Through a communication infrastructure, a smart grid can improve power reliability and quality to eliminate electricity blackout. Security is a challenging issue since the on-going smart grid systems facing increasing vulnerabilities as more and more automation, remote monitoring/controlling and supervision entities are interconnected.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of thermal energy storage systems installed in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants is presented, including the state-of-the-art on CSP plants all over the world and the trend of development, different technologies of TES systems for high temperature applications (200-1000°C) with a focus on thermochemical heat storage, and storage concepts for their integration.
Abstract: Solar thermal energy, especially concentrated solar power (CSP), represents an increasingly attractive renewable energy source. However, one of the key factors that determine the development of this technology is the integration of efficient and cost effective thermal energy storage (TES) systems, so as to overcome CSP's intermittent character and to be more economically competitive. This paper presents a review on thermal energy storage systems installed in CSP plants. Various aspects are discussed including the state-of-the-art on CSP plants all over the world and the trend of development, different technologies of TES systems for high temperature applications (200–1000°C) with a focus on thermochemical heat storage, and storage concepts for their integration in CSP plants. TES systems are necessary options for more than 70% of new CSP plants. Sensible heat storage technology is the most used in CSP plants in operation, for their reliability, low cost, easy to implement and large experimental feedback available. Latent and thermochemical storage technologies have much higher energy density thus may have a bright foreground. New concepts for TES integration are also proposed, especially coupled technology for higher operating temperature and cascade TES of modularized storage units for intelligent temperature control. The key contributions of this review paper consist of a comprehensive survey of CSP plants, their TES systems, the ways to enhance the heat and/or mass transfers and different new concepts for the integration of TES systems.

TL;DR: This paper comprehensively reviews the state of the art of HESSs system for MG applications and presents a general outlook of developing HESS industry.
Abstract: Energy storages introduce many advantages such as balancing generation and demand, power quality improvement, smoothing the renewable resource’s intermittency, and enabling ancillary services like frequency and voltage regulation in microgrid (MG) operation. Hybrid energy storage systems (HESSs) characterized by coupling of two or more energy storage technologies are emerged as a solution to achieve the desired performance by combining the appropriate features of different technologies. A single ESS technology cannot fulfill the desired operation due to its limited capability and potency in terms of lifespan, cost, energy and power density, and dynamic response. Hence, different configurations of HESSs considering storage type, interface, control method, and the provided service have been proposed in the literature. This paper comprehensively reviews the state of the art of HESSs system for MG applications and presents a general outlook of developing HESS industry. Important aspects of HESS utilization in MGs including capacity sizing methods, power converter topologies for HESS interface, architecture, controlling, and energy management of HESS in MGs are reviewed and classified. An economic analysis along with design methodology is also included to point out the HESS from investor and distribution systems engineers view. Regarding literature review and available shortcomings, future trends of HESS in MGs are proposed.

TL;DR: Simulation results show that GWO has better tuning capability than CLPSO, EPSDE and other similar population-based optimization techniques.
Abstract: In this article an attempt has been made to solve load frequency control (LFC) problem in an interconnected power system network equipped with classical PI/PID controller using grey wolf optimization (GWO) technique. Initially, proposed algorithm is used for two-area interconnected non-reheat thermal-thermal power system and then the study is extended to three other realistic power systems, viz. (i) two-area multi-units hydro-thermal, (ii) two-area multi-sources power system having thermal, hydro and gas power plants and (iii) three-unequal-area all thermal power system for better validation of the effectiveness of proposed algorithm. The generation rate constraint (GRC) of the steam turbine is included in the system modeling and dynamic stability of aforesaid systems is investigated in the presence of GRC. The controller gains are optimized by using GWO algorithm employing integral time multiplied absolute error (ITAE) based fitness function. Performance of the proposed GWO algorithm has been compared with comprehensive learning particle swarm optimization (CLPSO), ensemble of mutation and crossover strategies and parameters in differential evolution (EPSDE) and other similar meta-heuristic optimization techniques available in literature for similar test system. Moreover, to demonstrate the robustness of proposed GWO algorithm, sensitivity analysis is performed by varying the operating loading conditions and system parameters in the range of ± 50 % . Simulation results show that GWO has better tuning capability than CLPSO, EPSDE and other similar population-based optimization techniques.
