TL;DR: The authors examined the dynamic nature of false friends by offering a description of both their diachronic and synchronic characteristics, and analyzed false friends as they appear in the written work of students of English whose mother tongue is Catalan.
Abstract: Deceptive cognates exist in al1 European ~~ernaculars a a result of borrowing from a mmmon source, Latin. When languages come into contad, as happens in second language acquisition, these deceptive cognates constitute a source of lexical interference at al1 levels of dominion of the language This article traces the origin of false fiiends and presents the results of pi-eliminary research involvkg intermediate and proficiency leve1 students of English whose mother tongue is Catalan. Introduction It is the purpose of h s article to examine the dynamic nature of false friends by offering a description of both their diachronic and synchronic characteristics. Our stzidy focuses on lexical transfer fiom Catalan to English in Catalan speakers studying English. The frrst part of the article consists of a brief overview of the history of borrowing in the English language, eoncentrating on the periods which are richest in the importation of Latin words and which, in this way, may have contributed most false friends. The numerous examples provided supply ample proof of the dynamism of words which is the source of this type of lexical Merence . The second section deals with theoretical aspects of false friends in a synchronic fiamework. This is followed by the presentation of the results of two studies carried out in 1994 which analyse false friends as they appear in the written work of students of English whose mother tongue is Catalan. Diachronic Perspective When we speak about false friends, we are normally referring to interlingual deceptive cognates, that is, words which have the same, or a similar orthographiclphonetic form, which share some meanings but which have others which are not in common. There are, however, two areas, both intralingual, where we may speak of "second degree false friends" (Koessler, 1975: 15). They are products of the temporal and spatial variations which operate in language. Words and their meanings change through time. Language is not a fixed and stable thing as the 18th century philosophers considered it. It is closer to a living organism

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the results of an investigation on the breeding biology of the Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) during 14 breeding seasons (1975-1988) in orange groves located near Sagunto (Valencia, Spain).
EnglishThis study shows the results of an investigation on the breeding biology of the Greenfinch (Carduelis chloris) during 14 breeding seasons (1975-1988) in orange groves located near Sagunto (Valencia, Spain). The breeding season starts during the last days of March and finished in early August (Fig. 1). The clutch-size varies between 2 and 6 eggs, and the average clutch-size decrease in the second half of breeding season. The lower average clutch-size coincides with the end of breeding season (Table II). Breeding success varies along the breeding season and presents different patterns in relation with different periods of time (Table III). The decrease of breeding success as the breeding season proceeds is a consequence of increased starvation. The breeding population varies between 3.5 to 19.5 pairs x 10 ha-1 (Fig. 2).

TL;DR: The article as mentioned in this paper posar de manifest algunes de les caracteristiques fonetico-fonologiques de l'espanyol parlat a Lleida.

TL;DR: Although highly frequented by people, fruit orchards seem to be suitable breeding habitats for Turtle Doves in this region.
Abstract: Capsule Although subject to human disturbance Turtle Doves do nest successfully in these olive and orange orchards. Aim To investigate the breeding ecology of Turtle Doves in a man‐made agricultural habitat in central Morocco. Methods Turtle Dove nests were monitored in orange and olive orchards over three years (2006, 2007 and 2008). Nest abundance, nest location, egg‐laying chronology, clutch size, nest survival rates and breeding success were determined and compared between orchard types. Results The Moroccan population of Turtle Doves start breeding earlier than European populations. Clutch size, nest survival rates and breeding success were similar in orange and olive orchards. Nest location differed between orange and olive trees. Nest densities were 16 nests/ha in olive orchards and 45 nests/ha in orange orchards. Nest success rate averaged 48%. Daily nest survival rates did not vary according to orchard types, year and date. In the two orchards, no nest position variables were significant predicto...

TL;DR: For both Goldfinch and Greenfinches, the non-migrant southern populations of Sagunto in eastern Spain do not tend towards a more multi-brooded seasonal pattern of clutch size than the migrant Goldfinches of Britain.
Abstract: Single- and multi-brooded species of birds differ in their seasonal patterns of clutch size. Single-brooded species start with a maximum clutch size that declines continuously as the season progresses, whereas the clutch sizes of multi-brooded species usually increase to a mid-season maximum peak and then decrease progressively until the end of the breeding season. Previous studies have shown that multi-brooded migrant species present seasonal patterns that are similar to single-brooded species at high latitudes but similar to multi-brooded non-migratory species at lower latitudes. We studied the Greenfinch Carduelis chloris and Goldfinch C. carduelis populations in eastern Spain (Sagunto, Valencia) between 1975 and 2002 to compare seasonal variations in clutch sizes between years with early and late starts to the breeding season. The period over which clutch sizes increase was longer when the breeding season started earlier. The Goldfinch population showed no pattern of initial increase in clutch size when there was a late start to the breeding season: a late start shortens the season giving them less time to breed, and may also coincide with maximum food availability. Thus, the pattern of single-brooded species was observed. In the Greenfinch population, a trend toward the seasonal pattern of single-brooded species was also observed when the following indices were compared: clutch size increase, modal timing, initial slope and timing of maximum clutch size. We have also compared the seasonal patterns of clutch size of both species in eastern Spain with the patterns observed in Britain. Our results show that for both Goldfinches and Greenfinches, the non-migrant southern populations of Sagunto in eastern Spain do not tend towards a more multi-brooded seasonal pattern of clutch size than the migrant Goldfinches of Britain.
