TL;DR: In this paper, the authors highlight the philosophical stance of qualitative data analysis (QDA) and argue that QDA with its significantly broader attributes and extensive research capacity, in fact involves more than the coding, sorting and sifting of the qualitative data.
Abstract: A variety of prominent objectivist and positivist philosophical standpoints frequently attempt to ignore the extraordinary set of strengths and potentiality that qualitative data analysis (QDA) has in the social science research arena. Specifically, the notion that QDA involves non-scientific style of data collection and data analysis which comprises with coding, sorting and sifting of qualitative data, is frequently referred by many quantitative researchers to challenge or weaken the robustness and reliability of qualitative research. This paper aims to address this debate by scrutinising the nature and quality of the methods of qualitative research. By highlighting the philosophical stance of QDA, this paper tackles the criticisms of qualitative research, and also critically evaluates different approaches and perspectives of QDA. The paper finally goes on to justify that, QDA with its significantly broader attributes and extensive research capacity, in fact, involves more than the coding, sorting and sifting of qualitative data.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the extent of interpretivism to understand the contemporary social world and discuss the concept of "verstehen" and explain how it can add to our understanding of the social world phenomena.
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to critically discuss the extent of interpretivism to understand the contemporary social world. This paper firstly highlights the roots of interpretivism which can be traced back in the ancient history of philosophy. It then discusses the concept of interpretivism and gives a critical commentary on the Weber’s construction of ideal types to help explore the contemporary social world. The paper then further discusses the concept of “verstehen” and explains how it can add to our understanding of the social world phenomena. Following this analysis and tackling some philosophical debate, finally, this theoretical paper confirms that interpretivism has influenced the development of the social science and has helped our understanding of the contemporary social world to a great extent.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the two recent industrial accidents: the collapse of Rana Plaza and the fire at Tazreen Fashions, and find out the reasons behind these accidents.
Abstract: The purposes of this study are, firstly to investigate the two recent industrial accidents: the collapse of Rana Plaza and the fire at Tazreen Fashions, and secondly, to find out the reasons behind these accidents. The study particularly focuses on the readymade garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh. It is qualitative in nature and follows an interpretivist and constructivists philosophical paradigm. Data were collected through triangulation method which uses two deviant cases (Rana Plaza and Tazreen Garments), and responses from a qualitative questionnaire. The questionnaire sample includes 16 male participants from 8 RMG factories located in Dhaka. All the participants were top-level executives at those factories (i.e. owners and general managers). The study finds that non-compliance with the occupational health and safety (OHS) provisions and the evasive nature of the factory owners were the main causes of the accidents. The study also discovers that there is a significant difference in the OHS practice among the factory owners of the outsourced and the subcontracted factories. The study further explains the rationale behind this difference.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the extent of positivism in order for us to understand the contemporary social world and highlight the tenets and methodological implications of different positivist approaches, and critically analyze the extent to which this ideology aids our understanding of the concurrent social world.
Abstract: This theoretical paper aims to critically discuss the extent of positivism in order for us to understand the contemporary social world. The discussion concentrates on philosophical positivism from a social science standpoint, firstly, its origin and development during the eighteenth century, then secondly, the development of the Vienna Circle, and lastly, the influence of the late nineteenth century’s postmodernism has on positivism. Rather than focusing on the distinct recurrent anticipations of positivism of ancient ideologies of philosophy, the paper describes the theoretical understandings of positivism in sociological perspective. Then it highlights the tenets of positivism developed by different sociologists and philosophers. Lastly, by probing into those tenets and methodological implications of different positivist approaches it critically analyses the extent to which this ideology aids our understanding of the concurrent social world.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the managerial interpretation of the terms "error of judgement" and "white-collar crime" in relation to the evasion or negligence observed in administering occupational health and safety (OHS) provisions in the apparel manufacturing sector of Bangladesh.
Abstract: This paper investigates the managerial interpretation of the terms “error of judgement” and “white-collar crime” in relation to the evasion or negligence observed in administering occupational health and safety (OHS) provisions in the apparel manufacturing sector of Bangladesh. The research is qualitative in nature and follows an interpretivist paradigm. The questionnaire responses were collected from 20 mid- and top-level managers from 10 large apparel manufacturing factories located on the outskirts of Dhaka. The research reveals that all of the respondents have adequate knowledge about the relevant OHS provisions and safety protocols imposed on them by the local government and the global supply chain. They believe that the correct administration of the OHS provisions will reduce workplace accidents effectively. The research unfolds that the respondents interpret in different ways the terms "error of judgement” and “white-collar crime” in association with OHS negligence and evasion. Although empirical evidence shows that this type of negligence and evasion are considered as white-collar crime and punishable, most of the respondents in this research do not subscribe to this notion and alternatively believe that it is an “error of judgement” and therefore non-punishable.
