Review of GHG emissions in Pakistan compared to SAARC countries

Analysis of energy related carbon dioxide emission and reduction potential in Pakistan

Carbon dioxide emissions have been the primary source of extreme environmental pollution and have detrimental consequences on human life, irrespective of an economy being developed or underdeveloped. For the developing economies, in particular, it is imperative to reduce such emissions in order to sustain the growth of the respective economies. However, for designing appropriate emission reduction policies, it is appropriate to identify the sectors which contribute the most to carbon dioxide emissions and dampen the growth of overall economy. Against this background, the key intention of this study was to examine the influence of carbon dioxide emissions generated from various sources on the economic progress in Pakistan between 1971 and 2017. This study is important for Pakistan to sustain its economic progress and enable the nation to comply with commitments of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The econometric analysis conducted in this study considers a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model which is applied to ascertain the short- and long-run economic growth impacts associated with positive and negative shocks to CO2 emissions generated from various sources. The choice of this model is driven by its capacity to perform an asymmetric analysis which is relevant for suitable policy-making purposes. The overall results, in a nutshell, reveal that carbon dioxide emissions from Pakistan’s transportation sector influence the country’s economic progress. Positive shocks to such carbon dioxide emissions are originate to reduce economic progress in the long run while negative shocks are evidenced to boost economic growth both in the short and long run. In contrast, carbon dioxide emissions from other major sectors are found to be ineffective in influencing Pakistan's economic growth both in the short and long run. Hence, keeping into consideration the prospects of attaining sustainable economic growth, the Pakistan government must prioritize the implementation of CO2 emissions-inhibiting policies within the transportation sector. Simultaneously, the traditional fossil fuel dependency within this sector should also be phased out.

The dynamic impacts of CO2 emissions from different sources on Pakistan’s economic progress: a roadmap to sustainable development

This study is going to explore the relationship among the rate of inflation, economic growth and government expenditure in case of Pakistan. In this study, the government expenditure has been disaggregated in to the government current expenditure and the government development expenditure. This investigation is made by using the time series data during the period 1980-2010. The econometrics tools like Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) unit root test, ARDL, Johansen cointegration and Granger-causality test are used to investigate such relationship. The results derived by applying these econometrics tools show that there is a long term relationship between rate of inflation, economic growth and government expenditure, it means the government expenditures yield positive externalities and linkages. In the short run, the rate of inflation does not affect the economic growth but government expenditures do so. The causality test results show that there is unidirectional causality between rate of inflation and economic growth and; economic growth and government expenditure.

Inflation, Economic Growth and Government Expenditure of Pakistan: 1980-2010

The relationships among the macroeconomic variables and stock returns analyzed in both the developed and developing countries, but are not well estimated in Pakistan. The current study explores the time series as analysis of economic variables and stock market by applying the Exponential Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (EGARCH). The macroeconomic variables include interest rate, inflation, and gross domestic product. For representation of stock market, Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE-100 Index) is taken as test market. The monthly data of the variables for the time period from December 1991 to August 2012 is used for the current study analysis. The ADF and ARCH tests are used to check the stationarity and homoskedasticity in the data respectively. The results show that macroeconomic variables have substantial influence on the stock prices. The stock prices have much impact on the economy of the country, and are consider as the best indicators for future prediction of the market and economy as well. Furthermore, the stock market in Pakistan is highly volatile the regulatory bodies must pay attention to make it less volatile.

The relationship between macroeconomic volatility and the stock market volatility: Empirical evidence from Pakistan

Purpose




This paper is a direct extension of the work by Hussain et al (2012) They have investigated a long-term relationship between climatic change and economic growth in case of Pakistan Agricultural sector plays an important role in economic field, whereas industrial sector is the main source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission Therefore, this study aims to replace economic growth variable with industrial growth in case of Pakistan




Design/methodology/approach




Investigation is made on the basis of the environmental Kuznets curve by using the time series data during the period 1971-2009 The per capital carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is used as an environmental indicator and per capita industrial income as the economic indicator Different econometric tools including augmented Dickey–Fuller, autoregressive distributed lag and Granger-causality test are used to verify this relationship




Findings




The empirical findings will help the policy-makers of Pakistan in developing new standards and monitoring networks for reducing CO2 emission It is essential to extend the current research work at provincial and different sectors levels in order to have clear understanding about the impact of current emission rate




Originality/value




This study replaces economic growth variable with industrial growth in case of Pakistan because the industrial sector is the main source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission This study is to investigate a long-term relationship between climatic change and industrial growth in case of Pakistan

Carbon emissions and industrial growth: an ARDL analysis for Pakistan

The objective of the study is to measure the relationship between trading volume and returns; and change in trading volume and returns of stocks in Pakistan.Various techniques such as Unit root tests and GARCH have been applied on the data to determine the relationship between aforesaid variables. For this purpose, weekly data of Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE-100 index) has been collected and analyzed from January 2000 to March 2012.The GARCH results indicate a significant positive relationship between trading volume and returns; and change in trading volume and returns.This relationship is of great importance to individuals from investment and policy making perspective as trading volume reflects information about market expectations, and its relationship with price can have important implications for trading, speculation, forecasting and hedging activities.
