TL;DR: In this paper, the chemistry, types, and synthesis of polyurethanes (PUs) are discussed, with a specific emphasis on their recyclability and recoverability, and information is provided on the environmental friendliness of the PU.
Abstract: Polyurethanes (PUs) are a class of versatile materials with great potential for use in different applications, especially based on their structure–property relationships. Their specific mechanical, physical, biological, and chemical properties are attracting significant research attention to tailoring PUs for use in different applications. Enhancement of the properties and performance of PU-based materials may be achieved through changes to the production process or the raw materials used in their fabrication or via the use of advanced characterization techniques. Clearly, modification of the raw materials and production process through proper methods can produce PUs that are suitable for varied specific applications. The present study aims to shed light on the chemistry, types, and synthesis of different kinds of PUs. Some of the important research studies relating to PUs, including their synthesis method, characterization techniques, and research findings, are comprehensively discussed. Herein, recent advances in new types of PUs and their synthesis for various applications are also presented. Furthermore, information is provided on the environmental friendliness of the PUs, with a specific emphasis on their recyclability and recoverability.

Abstract: The utilization of renewable resources for the preparation of new materials is an alternative option for reducing the high demand of fossil feedstocks. Vegetable oils are potential bioresources that are renewable and abundantly available. Triglyceride-based vegetable oils, such as soybean, jatropha, linseed, sunflower, palm, castor, nahar seed, and canola oil, are being considered as precur- sors in the production of polymers. In this article, we attempt to summarize advancements in processes and technologies for the syn- thesis of polymers from various kinds of vegetable oils. The advantages and disadvantages of these biobased polymers with respect to traditional monomer-based ones are also highlighted. V C 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. TL;DR: In this paper, a polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) of various diameters (10-50 nm) were fabricated by extrusion and compression-molding techniques and characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical test and differential thermal analyses.
Abstract: Isotactic polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) of various diameters (10–50 nm) were fabricated by extrusion and compression-molding techniques and characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, mechanical test and differential thermal analyses. The pure PP exhibits both the a- and b-axes oriented α-crystal, whereas the MWCNTs induce the b-axis orientation of the α-crystal along with the formation of minor γ-phase crystal in nanocomposites. Crystallinity, long period of lamellae, tensile strength, tensile modulus (TM) and microhardness (H) of PP considerably change by different loading and sizes of MWCNTs. The estimated values H/TM = 0.09–0.10 for all samples approach the predicted value of 0.10 for polymers. The increase in crystallinity has been demonstrated by both XRD and DSC studies. Mathematical models have been invoked to explain the changes in mechanical properties. An increase in thermal stability of polymer matrix occurs with increasing MWCNTs size and loading.

TL;DR: In this paper, the composites were produced using alkali-treated kenaf fiber and recycled polypropylene to improve the interfacial bonding between them, and the results showed that best tensile strength (TS) was found at 40% loading of fibre and alkali treatment of fibre enhanced the TS by 57%.
Abstract: In this study, composites were produced using alkali-treated kenaf fibre and recycled polypropylene to improve the interfacial bonding between them. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene was used at a ratio of 1:10 to the fibre as a coupling agent. Blends are mixed together by means of a twin screw extruder and test specimens for mechanical testing were prepared through injection moulding machine. Fibre density, tensile property, elemental analysis, structural and morphological changes due to treatment was observed and their effects on the properties of the formulated composites were analyzed. Characterization of the composites was done by the tensile, flexural, impact and melt flow index tests. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analysis were carried out to evaluate the thermal properties of the composites. Experiment showed that best tensile strength (TS) was found at 40% loading of fibre and alkali treatment of fibre enhanced the TS by 57%. Activation energies were calcul...

TL;DR: In this paper, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as coupling agent to improve interfacial adhesion between fiber and RPP matrix, fiber surface modification was carried out by means of ultrasound treatment.
Abstract: Kenaf fiber (KF) reinforced recycled polypropylene (RPP) composites were produced by melt cast method. To improve interfacial adhesion between fiber and RPP matrix, fiber surface modification was carried out by means of ultrasound treatment. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a coupling agent. Composites were examined by mechanical test, melt flow indexing test, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Water uptake analysis and accelerated weathering test were carried out to find the suitability of the composites in outdoor application. Among the raw fiber contents ranging 10−50 wt % in the composites, the maximum tensile strength (TS) was observed at 40 wt % KF loading without using MAPP. Treated KF-based composite with MAPP promotes this maximum TS value, which is 57% higher than that of raw KF-based composite. TGA and DSC analyses exhibit an enhancement of thermal stability in treated KF-reinforced RPP composites with MAPP. Incorporation of MAPP in the composites shows higher activation energy, suggesting improved interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix. Response surface method was employed to demonstrate the optimal treatment parameters for TS, showing excellent agreement with the observed values. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. TL;DR: This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for "experimenters") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment.
Abstract: THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. TL;DR: In this article, the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) matrix composites have been studied by many researchers and few of them are discussed in this article.
Abstract: There has been a growing interest in utilizing fibers as reinforcement to produce composite materials. Scientists prefer thermoplastic polymeric matrices than thermosets due to the low production cycle, lower cost of processing and high reparability of thermoplastics. Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic matrix composites have gained commercial success in the semistructural and structural applications. Various fibers are widely used as reinforcement in thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) matrix to prepare composites. Mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced PP composites (FRPCs) are studied by many researchers and few of them are discussed in this article. Various fiber treatments, which are carried out to improve the fiber–matrix adhesion to get improved mechanical properties, are also discussed in this article. This article also focuses on coupling agents and fiber loading which affect the mechanical properties of FRPCs significantly.
