TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid optimization approach is presented for the layout design of unequal-area facilities, where simulated annealing is used to optimize a randomly generated initial placement on an "extended plane" considering the unequal area facilities enclosed in magnified envelop blocks, and an analytical method is applied to obtain the optimum placement of each envelop block in the direction of steepest descent.

TL;DR: An analytical approach to the optimization of the topological configuration of a set of functional blocks is presented, expressing the overlapping of blocks as an inequality constraint in a formulation based on nonlinear optimization, so that the blocks can move freely without any overlap during the optimization process.
Abstract: The paper presents an analytical approach to the optimization of the topological configuration of a set of functional blocks. By expressing the overlapping of blocks as an inequality constraint in a formulation based on nonlinear optimization, the blocks can move freely without any overlap during the optimization process. Some special characteristics of this problem, which prohibit the direct application of standard search methods for optimization, have been investigated. On the basis of this analysis, a search algorithm is developed. The proposed method allows fully automated design and exhibits computationally efficient convergence to local optima from random initial designs.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the literature on facility layout problem is made by referring to numerous papers about FLP, mainly motivated by the current and prospective trends of research on such points as layout evolution, workshop characteristics, problem formulation, and solution methodologies.
Abstract: Facility layout problem (FLP) is defined as the placement of facilities in a plant area, with the aim of determining the most effective arrangement in accordance with some criteria or objectives under certain constraints, such as shape, size, orientation, and pick-up/drop-off point of the facilities. It has been over six decades since Koopmans and Beckmann published their seminal paper on modeling the FLP. Since then, there have been improvements to these researchers’ original quadratic assignment problem. However, research on many aspects of the FLP is still in its initial stage; hence, the issue is an interesting field to work on. Here, a review of literature is made by referring to numerous papers about FLPs. The study is mainly motivated by the current and prospective trends of research on such points as layout evolution, workshop characteristics, problem formulation, and solution methodologies. It points to gaps in the literature and suggests promising directions for future research on FLP.
