A global overview of drought and heat-induced tree mortality reveals emerging climate change risks for forests
Craig D. Allen,Alison K. Macalady,Haroun Chenchouni,Dominique Bachelet,Nate G. McDowell,Michel Vennetier,Thomas Kitzberger,Andreas Rigling,David D. Breshears,Edward H. Hogg,Patrick Gonzalez,Rod Fensham,Zhen Zhang,Jorge Castro,N.A. Demidova,Jong Hwan Lim,Gillian Allard,Steven W. Running,Akkin Semerci,Neil S. Cobb +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the first global assessment of recent tree mortality attributed to drought and heat stress and identify key information gaps and scientific uncertainties that currently hinder our ability to predict tree mortality in response to climate change and emphasizes the need for a globally coordinated observation system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Episodic, patchy disturbances characterize an old-growth Picea abies dominated forest landscape in northeastern Europe
Timo Kuuluvainen,Tuomo Wallenius,Heikki Kauhanen,Tuomas Aakala,Kari Mikkola,N.A. Demidova,Boris Ogibin +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used satellite imagery and extensive field measurements to examine the landscape-level pattern and impact of an extensive disturbance episode that occurred in the early 2000s in primeval forest dominated by Picea abies in the Arkhangelsk region, Russia, due to drought and subsequent bark beetle (Ips typographus) outbreak.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of extracts from eight economically important forestry species against grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and identification of active constituents.
Dulcie A. Mulholland,Barbara Thuerig,Moses K. Langat,Lucius Tamm,Dorota A. Nawrot,EE James,Meywish Qayyum,Danni Shen,Kallie Ennis,Amy Jones,Heikki Hokkanen,N.A. Demidova,Denis Izotov,Hans-Jakob Schärer +13 more
TL;DR: The identified active compounds are interesting candidates for the development of a plant-derived fungicide active against a key pathogen in agriculture, providing an opportunity to the forest industry to transform low value by-products into high value-added, bioactive extracts.
ForestSpeCs findings on byproducts of forest industry: Could bark be more valuable than timber?
Heikki Hokkanen,Thomas Ahlnäs,Sami Alakurtti,N.A. Demidova,J. Fuchs,Denis Izotov,H. Kleeberg,Salme Koskimies,Moses K. Langat,James M. Lynch,I. Menzler-Hokkanen,Dulcie A. Mulholland,Hans-Jakob Schärer,A. Shikov,Lucius Tamm,Päivi Tammela,Jari Yli-Kauhaluoma +16 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of phenotypic plasticity of spruce species Picea abies (L.) Karst. and P. obovata (Ledeb.) on provenances tests in European North of Russia
TL;DR: Picea abies being the more adaptive species would be more responsive to climate changes in terms of survival and growth rate than P. obovata, in case of sustainable climate warming in the Northern areas of the Russian Plain, the further propagation and major distribution of P. Obovata can be expected.
