Welding and Joining of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys: A Review

Corrosion and microstructural aspects of dissimilar joints of titanium and type 304L stainless steel

Diffusion bonding was carried out to produce transition joints between commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) and 304 stainless steel (304 ss) in the temperature range of 800–950 °C, under uniaxial pressure of 3 MPa for 5.4 Ks. The transition joints were evaluated by tensile testing, light microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction. The study indicates that transition joints achieve 76% strength of pure Ti along with ∼5% ductility when processed at 850 °C. Electron probe microanalysis reveals substantial diffusion of Fe, Cr and Ni in the Ti side and Ti travels less distance in stainless steel matrix. A number of intermetallics σ phase, FeTi, Fe2Ti4O, NiTi and NiTi2 have been identified by X-ray diffraction near the interface. Increases in the joining temperature cause the volume fraction of intermetallics to increase. These intermetallics lower the strength of diffusion bonds when processed at higher temperature.

Diffusion bonded transition joints of titanium to stainless steel with improved properties

The effects of stable surface oxides on the interface morphologies and strengths of aluminium diffusion bonds are reviewed. Previous approaches, proposed to overcome problems with surface oxides when joining aluminium alloys and composites, are described and compared for both solid-state diffusion bonding and conventional transient liquid-phase diffusion bonding. Non-conventional joining methods, particularly the new method of temperature-gradient transient liquid-phase diffusion bonding and its capability of producing high-strength bonds reliably, also are considered. Interface evolution and bond strength when diffusion bonding materials with stable oxide films

This paper aims at providing a state-of-the-art review of an increasingly important class of joining technologies called solid-state (SS) welding, as compared to more conventional fusion welding. Among many other advantages such as low heat input, SS processes are particularly suitable for dissimilar materials joining. In this paper, major SS joining technologies such as the linear and rotary friction welding (RFW), friction stir welding (FSW), ultrasonic welding, impact welding, are reviewed, as well as diffusion and roll bonding (RB). For each technology, the joining process is first depicted, followed by the process characterization, modeling and simulation, monitoring/diagnostics/ nondestructive evaluation (NDE), and ended with concluding remarks. A discussion section is provided after reviewing all the technologies on the common critical factors that affect the SS processes. Finally, the future outlook is presented.
