An example method disclosed herein to monitor reception of a broadcast program by a broadcast receiver located in a statistically selected site comprises retrieving an audience measurement data packet from the broadcast receiver in order to identify the broadcast program, detecting a code embedded in the broadcast program in order to identify the broadcast program, extracting a signature from the broadcast program in order to identify the broadcast program, identifying the broadcast program through use of a software agent, and selecting at least one of the audience measurement data packet, the embedded code, the extracted signature or the software agent to identify the received program.

Methods and apparatus to monitor reception of programs and content by broadcast receivers

One of the most exciting technologies in today's Internet is the MBone. MBone stands for Multicast Backbone; it provides the infrastructure for efficient multipoint packet delivery in the Internet. The most popular scenario is worldwide audio-video conferencing. However, so far there are no satisfactory solutions available on how to archive multimedia data streams of multicast videoconferences, and how to make them accessible for remote sites (i.e. how to remotely record and remotely play back MBone conferences). In this paper we present architectural considerations, design issues and describe a prototypical implementation of a Video Conference Recording on Demand (VCRoD) service for the MBone. Our system is called MBone VCRoD Service (MVoD) and is a clientserver based architecture for interactive remote recording and playback of MBone sessions. MVoD is implemented based on open standards (e.g. CORBA), making it possible for other applications to interface it. Since the MVoD client application is implemented using JAVA, it will be possible to access the service from almost any platform.

A communications network configuration for delivery of multimedia services comprises a packet network to which a plurality of terminal devices are connected, a service provider network for providing multimedia services to the terminal devices, a virtual circuit switched network intermediate the packet and service provider networks, and a gateway distributed over the circuit switched network. The distributed gateway comprises a client application unit interfacing the circuit switched network to said packet network and a virtual channel interface unit interfacing the circuit switched network to the service provider network. The client application unit binds logical channels for a multimedia call to association tags for respective virtual channels of the circuit switched network and forwards said association tags to the virtual interfacing unit. The interfacing unit assigns to the multimedia call one or more virtual channels associated with the association tags and informs the client application unit of channel numbers for the assigned channels to thereby complete set up of the multimedia call.
