TL;DR: In this paper, a new sliding mode controller is proposed as the indirect control method and compared to a simple direct control method in order to control a buck converter in photovoltaic applications.
Abstract: DC/DC converters are widely used in many industrial and electrical systems. As DC/DC converters are nonlinear and time-variant systems, the application of linear control techniques for the control of these converters is not suitable. In this paper, a new sliding mode controller is proposed as the indirect control method and compared to a simple direct control method in order to control a buck converter in photovoltaic applications. The solar arrays are dependent power sources with nonlinear voltage-current characteristics under different environmental conditions (insolation and temperature). From this point of view, the DC/DC converter is particularly suitable for the application of the sliding mode control in photovoltaic application, because of its controllable states. Simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink software. The simulation results are presented for a step change in reference voltage and input voltage as well as step load variations. The simulations results of proposed method are compared with the conventional PID controller. The results show the good performance of the proposed sliding mode controller. The proposed method can be used for the other DC/DC converter.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: The results illustrate that the sliding mode MPPT has the potential of generating more electrical energy than the IC MPPT with benefits of up to 13.02% for the sunny daily profile and 27.57%" for the cloudy one.
Abstract: This paper presents a single-phase standalone photovoltaic (PV) system with two stages of converters. The aim of this work is to track the maximum power point (MPP) so as to transfer the maximum available power to the load and to control the output current in order to feed the AC load by a sinusoidal current. These goals are attained by using the sliding mode to design control laws in order to command the boost DC-DC and the inverter switches. Thus, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and an output current controller based on the sliding mode are proposed. The innovative aspect of this work is to propose a standalone PV system with the controllers based only on the sliding mode control approach. The proposed system is modeled and simulated under MATLAB Simulink under fast variations of irradiance and temperature. Then, the obtained results using the suggested MPPT are compared to those using the incremental conductance (IC) method. These results demonstrate the superiority of the sliding mode MPPT in terms of the tracking speed, the efficiency, and the time of response. Moreover, the current controller provides an output current of high quality with a THD of 3.47%. Furthermore, for accurate results, these controllers are evaluated under the fluctuations of two daily climatic profiles (sunny and cloudy) and compared those of the IC method. The results illustrate that the sliding mode MPPT has the potential of generating more electrical energy than the IC MPPT with benefits of up to 13.02% for the sunny daily profile and 27.57% for the cloudy one.

TL;DR: In this paper, a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) has been designed and analyzed for oceanic wave energy conversion, which is suitable for the point absorber type wave energy device.
Abstract: Electricity generation from oceanic wave depends on the wave dynamics and the behavior of the ocean. In this paper, a permanent magnet linear generator (PMLG) has been designed and analyzed for oceanic wave energy conversion. The proposed PMLG design is suitable for the point absorber type wave energy device. A mathematical model of ocean wave is presented to observe the output characteristics and performance of the PMLG with the variation of ocean waves. The generated voltage, current, power, applied force, magnetic flux linkage, and force components of the proposed PMLG have been presented for different sea wave conditions. The commercially available software package ANSYS/ANSOFT has been used to simulate the proposed PMLG by the finite element method. The magnetic flux lines, flux density, and field intensity of the proposed PMLG that greatly varies with time are presented for transient analysis. The simulation result shows the excellent features of the PMLG for constant and variable speeds related to wave conditions. These analyses help to select proper PMLG parameters for better utilization of sea wave to maximize output power.

TL;DR: In this article, a three phase asymmetrical power converter using IGBT is used in the feedback of motor to control the power factor of motor and optimization technique named bacterial foraging optimization is used.
Abstract: 2 Abstract: These motor are extensively used in aerospace, automotive and other home appliances. These motors have winding in the stator which is excited from a separate source. The control of these motor drives is obtained using converter circuits that control the excitation of the phase by switching converter switches. The conventional converter circuit suffers from low power factor and high harmonic content which in turns affects the performance of the motor drive. The aim of the work is to develop a suitable converter circuit that would give and improved power factor and low torque ripples. Three phase asymmetrical power converter using IGBT is used in the feedback of motor to control the power factor of motor. Further for minimization of ripples in torque and optimization technique named bacterial foraging optimization is used. It takes torque in the objective function and calculate ripples; assign new values to turn on and off angle of motor. So that an optimum position to the stator and rotor of motor can be assigned. Where ripple are minimum.
