Graphene-Like Two-Dimensional Materials

Atomic-scale control and manipulation of the microstructure of polycrystalline thin films during kinetically limited low-temperature deposition, crucial for a broad range of industrial applications, has been a leading goal of materials science during the past decades. Here, we review the present understanding of film growth processes—nucleation, coalescence, competitive grain growth, and recrystallization—and their role in microstructural evolution as a function of deposition variables including temperature, the presence of reactive species, and the use of low-energy ion irradiation during growth.

Microstructural evolution during film growth

The bandgaps of monolayer and bulk molybdenum sulfide (MoS2 ) result in that they are far from suitable for application as a saturable absorption device. In this paper, the operation of a broadband MoS2 saturable absorber is demonstrated by the introduction of suitable defects. It is believed that the results provide some inspiration in the investigation of two-dimensional optoelectronic materials.

Broadband Few‐Layer MoS2 Saturable Absorbers

We have studied the dispersion and exfoliation of four inorganic layered compounds, WS2, MoS2, MoSe2, and MoTe2, in a range of organic solvents. The aim was to explore the relationship between the chemical structure of the exfoliated nanosheets and their dispersibility. Sonication of the layered compounds in solvents generally gave few-layer nanosheets with lateral dimensions of a few hundred nanometers. However, the dispersed concentration varied greatly from solvent to solvent. For all four materials, the concentration peaked for solvents with surface energy close to 70 mJ/m2, implying that all four have surface energy close to this value. Inverse gas chromatography measurements showed MoS2 and MoSe2 to have surface energies of ∼75 mJ/m2, in good agreement with dispersibility measurements. However, this method suggested MoTe2 to have a considerably larger surface energy (∼120 mJ/m2). Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and molybdenum trioxide are investigated using Raman spectroscopy with emphasis on the application to tribological systems. The Raman vibrational modes were investigated for excitation wavelengths at 632.8 and 488 nm using both micro-crystalline MoS2 powder and natural MoS2 crystals. Differences are noted in the Raman spectra for these two different wavelengths, which are attributed to resonance effects due to overlap of the 632.8 nm source with electronic absorption bands. In addition, significant laser intensity effects are found that result in laser-induced transformation of MoS2 to MoO3. Finally, the transformation to molybdenum trioxide is explored as a function of temperature and atmosphere, revealing an apparent transformation at 375 K in the presence of oxygen. Overall, Raman spectroscopy is an useful tool for tribological study of MoS2 coatings, including the role of molybdenum trioxide transformations, although careful attention must be given to the laser excitation parameters (both wavelength and intensity) when interpreting Raman spectra.

A Raman Spectroscopic Study of MoS2 and MoO3: Applications to Tribological Systems

Chemical and tribological characterization of PbOMoS2 films grown by pulsed laser deposition

The fact. that dopants improve the friction and wear properties of sputtered MoS2 films is well known. However, the role of dopants in the mechanisms governing friction and wear are not well understood. The purpose of this work is to gain a fundamental understanding of their role by co-depositing a number of materials, i.e., Ni, Fe, Au, and. Sb2O3, with MoS2 and evaluating their effects on film chemistry, crystallinity, microstructure, and tribology. Friction and wear measurements were collected, using ball-on-flat and dual-rub shoe tribom-eters. Other physical and chemical properties were obtained using SEM, XPS, XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Crystalline MoS2 was seen in all of the films. In Sb2O3-doped films, an amorphous phase was also observed. The presence of dopants caused film densification and affected crystallite size. Tribology of tungsten disulfide–nanocrystalline zinc oxide adaptive lubricant films from ambient to 500°C

Mechanistic study of the synergism between Sb2O3 and MoS2 lubricant systems using Raman spectroscopy

The synthesis and characterization of tungsten disulphide (WS2) films grown on 440C stainless steel substrates using the 248 nm line from a KrF excimer laser are reported. Film properties could be adjusted by controlling substrate temperature and by laser or thermal anneals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, glancing angle XRD, Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate film chemistry, crystallinity and morphology. Films grown at room temperature were amorphous, near stoichiometric, and had a multiplicity of chemical states. Local order and bonding were improved most dramatically through post-deposition laser anneals. Crystallite size could be increased by raising the substrate temperature during deposition and, to a lesser degree, by post-deposition thermal anneals. Local disorder was observed within the larger crystallites compared to those that were laser annealed. Crystallinity was induced in amorphous films by mechanical rubbing at room temperature under conditions where frictional heating was negligible. The degree of control over film properties provided by PLD demonstrates its value for growing/designing tribological coatings.
