TL;DR: This work proposes and experimentally demonstrate a novel full-duplex bi-directional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM)-wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system based on commercially available red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) and phosphor-based LED (P-LED) with 575-Mb/s upstream transmission.
Abstract: We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel full-duplex bi-directional subcarrier multiplexing (SCM)-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) visible light communication (VLC) system based on commercially available red-green-blue (RGB) light emitting diode (LED) and phosphor-based LED (P-LED) with 575-Mb/s downstream and 225-Mb/s upstream transmission, employing various modulation orders of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). For the downlink, red and green colors/wavelengths are assigned to carry useful information, while blue chip is just kept lighting to maintain the white color illumination, and for the uplink, the low-cost P-LED is implemented. In this demonstration, pre-equalization and post-equalization are also adopted to compensate the severe frequency response of LEDs. Using this scheme, 4-user downlink and 1-user uplink transmission can be achieved. Furthermore, it can support more users by adjusting the bandwidth of each sub-channel. Bit error rates (BERs) of all links are below pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8x 10−3 after 66-cm free-space delivery. The results show that this scheme has great potential in the practical VLC system.

TL;DR: It is envisaged that VLC will become an indispensable part of 6G given its high-speed transmission advantages and will cooperate with other communication methods to benefit the authors' daily lives.
Abstract: 6G networks are expected to provide extremely high capacity and satisfy emerging applications, but current frequency bands may not be sufficient. Moreover, 6G will provide superior coverage by integrating space/air/underwater networks with terrestrial networks, given that traditional wireless communications are not able to provide high-speed data rates for nonterrestrial networks. Visible light communication (VLC) is a high-speed communication technique with an unlicensed frequency range of 400-800 THz and can be adopted as an alternative approach to solving these problems. In this article, we present the prospects and challenges of VLC in 6G in conjunction with its advances in high-speed transmissions. Recent hot research interests, including new materials and devices, advanced modulation, underwater VLC (UVLC), and signal processing based on machine learning, are also discussed. It is envisaged that VLC will become an indispensable part of 6G given its high-speed transmission advantages and will cooperate with other communication methods to benefit our daily lives.

TL;DR: An aggregate data rate of 8 Gb/s is experimentally achieved over a 1-m indoor free-space transmission with the bit error rate (BER) below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10-3.8 gbps, which is the highest data rate ever reported in high-speed VLC systems.
Abstract: In this paper, for the first time, we propose the use of a hybrid post equalizer in a high-order carrierless-amplitude-and-phase-modulation-based visible light communication (VLC) system. The hybrid equalizer consists of a linear equalizer, a Volterra-series-based nonlinear equalizer, and a decision-directed least mean squares equalizer to simultaneously mitigate the linear and nonlinear distortions of the VLC system. A commercially available red-blue-green-yellow light-emitting diode (RBGY LED) is utilized for four-wavelength multiplexing. By the hybrid equalizer, an aggregate data rate of 8 Gb/s is experimentally achieved over a 1-m indoor free-space transmission with the bit error rate (BER) below the 7% forward error correction (FEC) limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 . To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest data rate ever reported in high-speed VLC systems.

TL;DR: The context of VLC is outlined, its unique benefits are outlined, and the state of the art research contributions of the assembled papers are described.
Abstract: Visible light communications (VLC) is an emerging field of optical communications that focuses on the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. Much existing work in optical communications exists, mainly optimized for capacity and transmission performance in fiber and free-space with biases toward spectrum that minimizes attenuation in the medium. However, the use of the visible spectrum has gained interest due to its availability and the ease at which it can be modulated using light emitting diodes (LEDs). Recent demand factors due to the burgeoning mobile industry and the rapid evolution of LED-based lighting are also driving this interest. Here, and in this special issue, we outline the context of VLC, its unique benefits, and describe the state of the art research contributions of the assembled papers.

TL;DR: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one, which seems an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality.
Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: In this paper, the state-of-the-art technologies on photonics-based terahertz communications are compared with competing technologies based on electronics and free-space optical communications.
Abstract: This Review covers the state-of-the-art technologies on photonics-based terahertz communications, which are compared with competing technologies based on electronics and free-space optical communications. Future prospects and challenges are also discussed. Almost 15 years have passed since the initial demonstrations of terahertz (THz) wireless communications were made using both pulsed and continuous waves. THz technologies are attracting great interest and are expected to meet the ever-increasing demand for high-capacity wireless communications. Here, we review the latest trends in THz communications research, focusing on how photonics technologies have played a key role in the development of first-age THz communication systems. We also provide a comparison with other competitive technologies, such as THz transceivers enabled by electronic devices as well as free-space lightwave communications.

TL;DR: This survey provides a technology overview and review of existing literature of visible light communication and sensing and outlines important challenges that need to be addressed in order to design high-speed mobile networks using visible light Communication-VLC.
Abstract: The solid-state lighting is revolutionizing the indoor illumination. Current incandescent and fluorescent lamps are being replaced by the LEDs at a rapid pace. Apart from extremely high energy efficiency, the LEDs have other advantages such as longer lifespan, lower heat generation, and improved color rendering without using harmful chemicals. One additional benefit of LEDs is that they are capable of switching to different light intensity at a very fast rate. This functionality has given rise to a novel communication technology (known as visible light communication—VLC) where LED luminaires can be used for high speed data transfer. This survey provides a technology overview and review of existing literature of visible light communication and sensing. This paper provides a detailed survey of 1) visible light communication system and characteristics of its various components such as transmitter and receiver; 2) physical layer properties of visible light communication channel, modulation methods, and MIMO techniques; 3) medium access techniques; 4) system design and programmable platforms; and 5) visible light sensing and application such as indoor localization, gesture recognition, screen-camera communication, and vehicular networking. We also outline important challenges that need to be addressed in order to design high-speed mobile networks using visible light communication.
