TL;DR: The results confirmed that the proposed adaptive mutualism phase and modified parasitism phase with a normal line method as an archiving technique provide superior and competitive results than the former obtained results.
Abstract: Multiple objective structural optimization is a challenging problem in which suitable optimization methods are needed to find optimal solutions. Therefore, to answer such problems effectively, a multi-objective modified adaptive symbiotic organisms search (MOMASOS) with two modified phases is planned along with a normal line method as an archiving technique for designing of structures. The proposed algorithm consists of two separate improved phases including adaptive mutualism and modified parasitism phases. The probabilistic nature of mutualism phase of MOSOS lets design variables to have higher exploration and higher exploitation simultaneously. As search advances, a stability between the global search and a local search has a significant effect on the solutions. Therefore, an adaptive mutualism phase is added to the offer MOASOS. Also, the parasitism phase of MOSOS offers over exploration which is a major issue of this phase. The over exploration results in higher computational cost since the majority of the new solutions gets rejected due to inferior objective functional values. In consideration of this issue, the parasitism phase is upgraded to a modified parasitism phase to increase the possibility of getting improved solutions. In addition, the proposed changes are comparatively simple and do not need an extra parameter setting for MOSOS. For the truss problems, mass minimization and maximization of nodal deflection are considered as objective functions, elemental stresses are considered as behavior constraints and (discrete) elemental sections are considered as side constraints. Five truss optimization problems validate the applicability of the considered meta-heuristics to solve complex engineering. Also, four constrained benchmark engineering design problems are solved to demonstrate the effectiveness of MOMASOS. The results confirmed that the proposed adaptive mutualism phase and modified parasitism phase with a normal line method as an archiving technique provide superior and competitive results than the former obtained results.

TL;DR: A novel two-archive Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (2ArchMGWO) is proposed for solving Multi- Objective Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (MORPD) problems and the optimum results obtained are compared based on the hypervolume indicator and they reveal that 2Arch MGWO is clearly superior to the others.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel two-archive Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (2ArchMGWO) is proposed for solving Multi-Objective Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (MORPD) problems. The optimizer has been improved from its original Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (MGWO) by modifying the reproduction operator and adding the 2-archive concept to the algorithm. It is then implemented on solving MORPD with objective functions being active power loss minimization and voltage profile improvement (voltage deviation minimization). The generator bus voltages, tap setting transformers and shunt reactive power sources or flexible alternating current transmission systems are set as design variables. The proposed algorithm along with other existing multiobjective optimizers are applied to solve three test problems with the standard IEEE 30-bus, IEEE 57-bus, and the IEEE 118-bus power systems. The optimum results obtained from the various optimizers performance are compared based on the hypervolume indicator and they reveal that 2ArchMGWO is clearly superior to the others.

TL;DR: The new optimizer, which is elite opposition-based learning grasshopper optimization method (EOBL-GOA), is validated with several engineering design probles such as a welded beam design problem, car side crash problem, multiple clutch disc problem, hydrostatic thrust bearing problem, three-bar truss, and cantilever beam problem, and finally used for the optimization of a suspension arm of the vehicles.
Abstract: Optimizing real-life engineering design problems are challenging and somewhat difficult if optimum solutions are expected. The development of new efficient optimization algorithms is crucial for this task. In this paper, a recently invented grasshopper optimization algorithm is upgraded from its original version. The method is improved by adding an elite opposition-based learning methodology to an elite opposition-based learning grasshopper optimization algorithm. The new optimizer, which is elite opposition-based learning grasshopper optimization method (EOBL-GOA), is validated with several engineering design probles such as a welded beam design problem, car side crash problem, multiple clutch disc problem, hydrostatic thrust bearing problem, three-bar truss, and cantilever beam problem, and finally used for the optimization of a suspension arm of the vehicles. The optimum results reveal that the EOBL-GOA is among the best algorithms reported in the literature.

TL;DR: It is found that it is a high time to provide a critical review of the latest literatures published and also to point out some important future avenues of research on DE.
Abstract: Differential Evolution (DE) is arguably one of the most powerful and versatile evolutionary optimizers for the continuous parameter spaces in recent times. Almost 5 years have passed since the first comprehensive survey article was published on DE by Das and Suganthan in 2011. Several developments have been reported on various aspects of the algorithm in these 5 years and the research on and with DE have now reached an impressive state. Considering the huge progress of research with DE and its applications in diverse domains of science and technology, we find that it is a high time to provide a critical review of the latest literatures published and also to point out some important future avenues of research. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and organize the information on these current developments on DE. Beginning with a comprehensive foundation of the basic DE family of algorithms, we proceed through the recent proposals on parameter adaptation of DE, DE-based single-objective global optimizers, DE adopted for various optimization scenarios including constrained, large-scale, multi-objective, multi-modal and dynamic optimization, hybridization of DE with other optimizers, and also the multi-faceted literature on applications of DE. The paper also presents a dozen of interesting open problems and future research issues on DE.

TL;DR: A novel multi-objective algorithm called Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (MOGWO) is proposed in order to optimize problems with multiple objectives for the first time.
Abstract: Due to the novelty of the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), there is no study in the literature to design a multi-objective version of this algorithm. This paper proposes a Multi-Objective Grey Wolf Optimizer (MOGWO) in order to optimize problems with multiple objectives for the first time. A fixed-sized external archive is integrated to the GWO for saving and retrieving the Pareto optimal solutions. This archive is then employed to define the social hierarchy and simulate the hunting behavior of grey wolves in multi-objective search spaces. The proposed method is tested on 10 multi-objective benchmark problems and compared with two well-known meta-heuristics: Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm Based on Decomposition (MOEA/D) and Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). The qualitative and quantitative results show that the proposed algorithm is able to provide very competitive results and outperforms other algorithms. Note that the source codes of MOGWO are publicly available at http://www.alimirjalili.com/GWO.html. A novel multi-objective algorithm called Multi-objective Grey Wolf Optimizer is proposed.MOGWO is benchmarked on 10 challenging multi-objective test problems. The quantitative results show the superior convergence and coverage of MOGWO.The coverage ability of MOGWO is confirmed by the qualitative results as well.

TL;DR: The experimental results and statistical tests demonstrate that the I-GWO algorithm is very competitive and often superior compared to the algorithms used in the experiments, and the results of the proposed algorithm on the engineering design problems demonstrate its efficiency and applicability.
Abstract: In this article, an Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer (I-GWO) is proposed for solving global optimization and engineering design problems. This improvement is proposed to alleviate the lack of population diversity, the imbalance between the exploitation and exploration, and premature convergence of the GWO algorithm. The I-GWO algorithm benefits from a new movement strategy named dimension learning-based hunting (DLH) search strategy inherited from the individual hunting behavior of wolves in nature. DLH uses a different approach to construct a neighborhood for each wolf in which the neighboring information can be shared between wolves. This dimension learning used in the DLH search strategy enhances the balance between local and global search and maintains diversity. The performance of the proposed I-GWO algorithm is evaluated on the CEC 2018 benchmark suite and four engineering problems. In all experiments, I-GWO is compared with six other state-of-the-art metaheuristics. The results are also analyzed by Friedman and MAE statistical tests. The experimental results and statistical tests demonstrate that the I-GWO algorithm is very competitive and often superior compared to the algorithms used in the experiments. The results of the proposed algorithm on the engineering design problems demonstrate its efficiency and applicability.
