Increasingly, for many application areas, it is becoming important to include elements of nonlinearity and non-Gaussianity in order to model accurately the underlying dynamics of a physical system. Moreover, it is typically crucial to process data on-line as it arrives, both from the point of view of storage costs as well as for rapid adaptation to changing signal characteristics. In this paper, we review both optimal and suboptimal Bayesian algorithms for nonlinear/non-Gaussian tracking problems, with a focus on particle filters. Particle filters are sequential Monte Carlo methods based on point mass (or "particle") representations of probability densities, which can be applied to any state-space model and which generalize the traditional Kalman filtering methods. Several variants of the particle filter such as SIR, ASIR, and RPF are introduced within a generic framework of the sequential importance sampling (SIS) algorithm. These are discussed and compared with the standard EKF through an illustrative example.

Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning

Today's Web-enabled deluge of electronic data calls for automated methods of data analysis. Machine learning provides these, developing methods that can automatically detect patterns in data and then use the uncovered patterns to predict future data. This textbook offers a comprehensive and self-contained introduction to the field of machine learning, based on a unified, probabilistic approach. The coverage combines breadth and depth, offering necessary background material on such topics as probability, optimization, and linear algebra as well as discussion of recent developments in the field, including conditional random fields, L1 regularization, and deep learning. The book is written in an informal, accessible style, complete with pseudo-code for the most important algorithms. All topics are copiously illustrated with color images and worked examples drawn from such application domains as biology, text processing, computer vision, and robotics. Rather than providing a cookbook of different heuristic methods, the book stresses a principled model-based approach, often using the language of graphical models to specify models in a concise and intuitive way. Probabilistic Robotics

Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, China, departed on 8 March 2014 carrying 239 passengers and crew. Communications with the aircraft were lost as it transitioned from Malaysian to Vietnamese airspace, and the subsequent search and rescue efforts were unable to find the missing aircraft. Radar data indicates that the aircraft turned to the southwest and crossed Malaysia and then f lew northwest along the Malacca Strait. When the aircraft moved beyond radar coverage, it was still carrying enough fuel to fly for several hours, and the size of the reachable area is almost 20% of the surface of the Earth. Although communications were lost early in flight, there was an active communications link between the aircraft and a satellite; metadata from signaling messages on the link provide information about where the aircraft was, even though no user data was communicated.

How Statistical Signal Processing Was Used to Define the MH370 Search Zone

The bootstrap filter is an algorithm for implementing recursive Bayesian filters. The required density of the state vector is represented as a set of random samples that are updated and propagated by the algorithm. The method is not restricted by assumptions of linearity or Gaussian noise: It may be applied to any state transition or measurement model. A Monte Carlo simulation example of a bearings-only tracking problem is presented, and the performance of the bootstrap filter is compared with a standard Cartesian extended Kalman filter (EKF), a modified gain EKF, and a hybrid filter. A preliminary investigation of an application of the bootstrap filter to an exoatmospheric engagement with non-Gaussian measurement errors is also given.
