How Statistical Signal Processing Was Used to Define the MH370 Search Zone

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report that although communications with the aircraft were lost early in flight, there was an active communications link between the aircraft and a satellite; metadata from signaling messages on the link provide information about where the aircraft was, even though no user data was communicated.

Bayesian state estimation for tracking and guidance using the bootstrap filter

TL;DR: The bootstrap filter as discussed by the authors is an algorithm for implementing recursive Bayesian filters, which is not restricted by assumptions of linearity or Gaussian noise: it can be applied to any state transition or measurement model.
