Abstract: Most approaches to structured output prediction rely on a hypothesis space of prediction functions that compute their output by maximizing a linear scoring function. In this paper we present two novel learning algorithms for this hypothesis class, and a statistical analysis of their performance. The methods rely on efficiently computing the first two moments of the scoring function over the output space, and using them to create convex objective functions for training. We report extensive experimental results for sequence alignment, named entity recognition, and RNA secondary structure prediction.

Abstract: Analysing the representation of gender in news media has a long history within the fields of journalism, media and communication. Typically this can be performed by measuring how often people of each gender are mentioned within the textual content of news articles. In this paper, we adopt a different approach, classifying the faces in images of news articles into their respective gender. We present a study on $885{,}573$ news articles gathered from the web, covering a period of four months between 19th October 2014 and 19th January 2015 from $882$ news outlets. Findings show that gender bias differs by topic, with Fashion and the Arts showing the least bias. Comparisons of gender bias by outlet suggest that tabloid-style news outlets may be less gender-biased than broadsheet-style ones, supporting previous results from textual content analysis of news articles.

Abstract: The tutorial starts with an overview of the concepts of VC dimension and structural risk minimization. We then describe linear Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for separable and non-separable data, working through a non-trivial example in detail. We describe a mechanical analogy, and discuss when SVM solutions are unique and when they are global. We describe how support vector training can be practically implemented, and discuss in detail the kernel mapping technique which is used to construct SVM solutions which are nonlinear in the data. We show how Support Vector machines can have very large (even infinite) VC dimension by computing the VC dimension for homogeneous polynomial and Gaussian radial basis function kernels. While very high VC dimension would normally bode ill for generalization performance, and while at present there exists no theory which shows that good generalization performance is guaranteed for SVMs, there are several arguments which support the observed high accuracy of SVMs, which we review. Results of some experiments which were inspired by these arguments are also presented. We give numerous examples and proofs of most of the key theorems. There is new material, and I hope that the reader will find that even old material is cast in a fresh light.
