LIBSVM is a library for Support Vector Machines (SVMs). We have been actively developing this package since the year 2000. The goal is to help users to easily apply SVM to their applications. LIBSVM has gained wide popularity in machine learning and many other areas. In this article, we present all implementation details of LIBSVM. Issues such as solving SVM optimization problems theoretical convergence multiclass classification probability estimates and parameter selection are discussed in detail.

Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques

The tutorial starts with an overview of the concepts of VC dimension and structural risk minimization. We then describe linear Support Vector Machines (SVMs) for separable and non-separable data, working through a non-trivial example in detail. We describe a mechanical analogy, and discuss when SVM solutions are unique and when they are global. We describe how support vector training can be practically implemented, and discuss in detail the kernel mapping technique which is used to construct SVM solutions which are nonlinear in the data. We show how Support Vector machines can have very large (even infinite) VC dimension by computing the VC dimension for homogeneous polynomial and Gaussian radial basis function kernels. While very high VC dimension would normally bode ill for generalization performance, and while at present there exists no theory which shows that good generalization performance is guaranteed for SVMs, there are several arguments which support the observed high accuracy of SVMs, which we review. Results of some experiments which were inspired by these arguments are also presented. We give numerous examples and proofs of most of the key theorems. There is new material, and I hope that the reader will find that even old material is cast in a fresh light.

A Tutorial on Support Vector Machines for Pattern Recognition

Support Vector Machines work by mapping training data for classiication tasks into a high dimensional feature space. In the feature space they then nd a maximal margin hyperplane which separates the data. This hyperplane is usually found using a quadratic programming routine which is computation-ally intensive, and is non trivial to implement. In this paper we propose an adaptation of the Adatron algorithm for clas-siication with kernels in high dimensional spaces. The algorithm is simple and can nd a solution very rapidly with an exponentially fast rate of convergence (in the number of iterations) towards the optimal solution. Experimental results with real and artiicial datasets are provided.

The Kernel-Adatron Algorithm: A Fast and Simple Learning Procedure for Support Vector Machines

The problem of learning a semantic representation of a text document from data is addressed, in the situation where a corpus of unlabeled paired documents is available, each pair being formed by a short English document and its French translation. This representation can then be used for any retrieval, categorization or clustering task, both in a standard and in a cross-lingual setting. By using kernel functions, in this case simple bag-of-words inner products, each part of the corpus is mapped to a high-dimensional space. The correlations between the two spaces are then learnt by using kernel Canonical Correlation Analysis. A set of directions is found in the first and in the second space that are maximally correlated. Since we assume the two representations are completely independent apart from the semantic content, any correlation between them should reflect some semantic similarity. Certain patterns of English words that relate to a specific meaning should correlate with certain patterns of French words corresponding to the same meaning, across the corpus. Using the semantic representation obtained in this way we first demonstrate that the correlations detected between the two versions of the corpus are significantly higher than random, and hence that a representation based on such features does capture statistical patterns that should reflect semantic information. Then we use such representation both in cross-language and in single-language retrieval tasks, observing performance that is consistently and significantly superior to LSI on the same data.

Inferring a Semantic Representation of Text via Cross-Language Correlation Analysis

Comparison of whole genomes has revealed that changes in the size of gene families among organisms is quite common. However, there are as yet no models of gene family evolution that make it possible to estimate ancestral states or to infer upon which lineages gene families have contracted or expanded. In addition, large differences in family size have generally been attributed to the effects of natural selection, without a strong statistical basis for these conclusions. Here we use a model of stochastic birth and death for gene family evolution and show that it can be efficiently applied to multispecies genome comparisons. This model takes into account the lengths of branches on phylogenetic trees, as well as duplication and deletion rates, and hence provides expectations for divergence in gene family size among lineages. The model offers both the opportunity to identify large-scale patterns in genome evolution and the ability to make stronger inferences regarding the role of natural selection in gene family expansion or contraction. We apply our method to data from the genomes of five yeast species to show its applicability.

Estimating the tempo and mode of gene family evolution from comparative genomic data.

We investigate the problem of predicting the quality of sentences produced by machine translation systems when reference translations are not available. The problem is addressed as a regression task and a method that takes into account the contribution of different features is proposed. We experiment with this method for translations produced by various MT systems and different language pairs, annotated with quality scores both automatically and manually. Results show that our method allows obtaining good estimates and that identifying a reduced set of relevant features plays an important role. The experiments also highlight a number of outstanding features that were consistently selected as the most relevant and could be used in different ways to improve MT performance or to enhance MT evaluation.
