TL;DR: In this article, a series of 1g model tests were conducted to investigate the accumulated vertical pullout displacement and unloading stiffness of bucket foundations embedded in dry and saturated sands, and empirical equations were proposed for the preliminary design of single or tripod bucket foundations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the bearing capacities of tripod bucket foundations were analyzed in medium and dense sand by performing a series of 3D finite element analyses, and it was shown that the horizontal bearing capacities reached the maximum values at a spacing ratio of S/D =15 to 35 for the foundation with an embedment ratio of L / D =05 to 1 (where S is the bucket spacing, D is bucket diameter, and L is the skirt length of the tripod bucket).

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of slope on the dynamic behavior of pile-supported structures by performing a series of centrifuge tests was evaluated by applying the piecewise cubic spline method to fit the measured bending moment curves along piles.
Abstract: A key issue in the design of pile-supported structures on sloping ground is soil–pile interaction, which becomes more complicated in case of dynamic loading. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of slope on the dynamic behavior of pile-supported structures by performing a series of centrifuge tests. Three models were prepared by varying the slope and soil density of dry sand grounds. The mass supported on 3 by 3 group piles was shaken applying sinusoidal wave with various amplitudes. Test results showed that the location of maximum values and distribution shape of the bending moment below the ground surface varied noticeably with the pile position in the slope case. The relationship between the soil resistance and pile deflection (p–yp loops) was carefully evaluated by applying the piecewise cubic spline method to fit the measured bending moment curves along piles. It was found that the shape of the p–yp loops was irregular due to the effect of slope, and immensely influenced by the movement of the unstable zone. In addition, the effect of the pile group in the horizontal case was evaluated by comparing with the previously suggested curves that represent the relationship between the soil resistance and pile–soil relative displacement (p–y curves) to propose the multiplier coefficients.

TL;DR: In this paper, a 3D numerical model of a single pile in sandy soil was built to analyse the interface strength parameter, which was defined as the ratio of the lateral force mobilised on the interface to the confining stress multiplied by the pile perimeter.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed the computational limit analysis to investigate the uplift capacity of circular piles in sands, where the effects of the important variables including pile length and diameter, soil friction angle and unit weight, and roughness factor at soil-pile interface are examined extensively using the dimensionless parameters while the predicted failure mechanisms associated with the parameters are discussed and compared.

TL;DR: In this article, a large-scale group of steel pipe piles and an isolated single pile were subjected to two-way cyclic lateral loading in a submerged firm to dense sand that was placed and compacted around the piles.
Abstract: A large‐scale group of steel pipe piles and an isolated single pile were subjected to two‐way cyclic lateral loading. The tests were conducted in a submerged firm to dense sand that was placed and compacted around the piles. All of the piles were extensively instrumented so that the variation in soil resistance within the group could be determined. The response of the piles in the group was also compared with the response of the isolated single pile. The loss of efficiency of the piles in the group was related principally to “shadowing” (i.e., the loss of soil resistance of piles in the trailing rows). Piles in the leading row supported a large proportion of the group load and behaved similarly to the isolated single pile. Two‐way cyclic loading had little effect on the distribution of load to the piles in the group, but tended to densify the sand around both the single pile and the group piles.

TL;DR: In this article, the integral behavior of the twin-tube tunnel, cosidering to different excavation cross-section and nonideal construction quality, is analyzed using FLAC3D.
Abstract: Integral stability and lining stability of the twin-tube tunnel are lower than that of the single tunnel, and the mechanical performance during excavation is more complex. In this paper FLAC3D is used to analyze the integral behavior of the twin-tube tunnel, cosidering to different excavation cross-section and nonideal construction quality. Conclusions are made from the analysis of the caeculated stress, displacement and axial force of the cable. It is helpful to the design and construction of the twin-tube tunnel in China.
