Towards the design of high-performance plant fibre composites

Abaca fibers demonstrate enormous potential as reinforcing agents in composite materials. In this study, abaca fibers were immersed in 5, 10 or 15 wt.% NaOH solutions for 2 h, and the effects of the alkali treatments on the mechanical characteristics and interfacial adhesion of the fibers in a model abaca fiber/epoxy composite system systematically evaluated. After 5 wt.% NaOH treatment, abaca fibers showed increased crystallinity, tensile strength and Young’s modulus compared to untreated fibers, and also improved interfacial shear strength with an epoxy. Stronger alkali treatments negatively impacted fiber stiffness and suitability for composite applications. Results suggest that mild alkali treatments (e.g. 5 wt.% NaOH for 2 h) are highly beneficial for the manufacture of abaca fiber-reinforced polymer composites.

Effect of alkali treatment on interfacial bonding in abaca fiber-reinforced composites

The effects of fibre content (5–30 wt%) and fibre treatment on surface morphology, tensile, flexural, thermal and biodegradable properties of polylactic acid (PLA)/coir fibre biocomposites were evaluated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and soil burial method. Similar decreasing trends were found for tensile and flexural strengths with higher strength values obtained for PLA/treated coir fibre biocomposites. 20 wt% treated coir fibres were determined to achieve optimum tensile and flexural strengths of biocomposites. Regardless of fibre treatment, the thermal stability of biocomposites is worsened with increasing the fibre content. The decreased cold crystallisation temperatures of biocomposites further confirms the effective nucleating agent role of coir fibres. The biocomposites undergo much faster degradation than PLA, with the maximum weight loss of 34.9% in treated fibre biocomposites relative to 18% in PLA after 18-day burial, arising from the hydrophilic nature of coir fibres.

Effect of fiber treatment on flexural properties of natural fiber reinforced composites: A review

The poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) biodegradable composites reinforced with coir fibers were developed. The effect of alkali treatment on the surface morphology and mechanical properties of coir fibers, interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and mechanical properties of coir fiber/PBS composites was studied. The effect of fiber mass content varying from 10% to 30% on the mechanical properties of coir fiber/PBS composites was also investigated. The coir fibers which are soaked in 5% sodium hydroxide solution at room temperature (RT) for 72 h showed the highest IFSS with 55.6% higher than untreated coir fibers. The mechanical properties of alkali-treated coir fiber/PBS composites are significantly higher than those of untreated fibers. The best mechanical properties of alkali-treated coir fiber/PBS composite were achieved at fiber mass content of 25% in this study, which showed an increase of tensile strength by 54.5%, tensile modulus by 141.9%, flexural strength by 45.7% and flexural modulus by 97.4% compared to those of pure PBS resin. The fiber surface morphologies and fractured surface of the composites exhibited an improvement of interfacial fiber–matrix adhesion in the composites reinforced with alkali-treated coir fibers.

Effect of alkali treatment on interfacial and mechanical properties of coir fiber reinforced poly(butylene succinate) biodegradable composites

The use of graft copolymer of maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) as a coupling agent in jute-polypropylene composites improved the mechanical properties of the composites. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations for fractured surfaces of unmodified and modified jute-polypropylene composites confirmed that the increase in performance was due to an increase of fiber-matrix adhesion. Jute and glass fibers were hybridized by ply-by-ply and skin-core structures, here glass and jute fibers were used as the skin and core layers, respectively. The test results show that the hybrid composites have superior mechanical properties. Especially, the impact strength increases significantly from 13.2kJ/m2 to 38.9kJ/m2, which is 190% higher than that of a jute fiber reinforced composite.

Study on Preparation of Polymer Composites Based on Polypropylene Reinforced by Jute Fibers

Glass fiber/bamboo fiber hybrid BMC laminates were fabricated by compression molding, and their physico-mechanical properties were investigated. To improve their properties, many factors (constituent’s ratio, process conditions, bamboo fiber content) were varied. The composite material reinforced with 25 wt% hybrid fibers (25% bamboo and 75% glass fibers) showed better physico-mechanical properties (tensile strength: 37.0 MPa, flexural strength: 140 MPa, impact strength: 32 kJ/m2) than other combinations.

Study on Fabrication of BMC Laminates Based on Unsaturated Polyester Resin Reinforced by Hybrid Bamboo/Glass Fibers

This study has investigated the effect of hydroperoxide treatment on the properties of bagasse fibers in order to get the value added material using by-products from sugar production such as reinforcement for composite materials. The results of processing bagasse fibers with hydroperoxide at different concentration, temperature and treatement time showed that treatment condition had a great influence on the properties of the obtained fibers. With the suitable treatement conditions of 10% peroxide concentration, treatment time of 40 minutes, treatment temperature at 60 0C, the treated fiber has a more homogeneous surface than the untreated. The composite using hybrid bagasse/glass fiber has higher flexural and impact resistance than when using glass fiber and reaches 162.6 MPa and 38.9 KJ/m2 (16.7% and 213% respectively compared to composite using glass fiber only). This can be explained that the treated bagasse fiber has better wetting ability with the matrix resin and together with the energy absorption capacity of the fiber bundle, it leads to an increase in flexural strength and impact strength of composite material.
