TL;DR: A number of examples of biocompatible, intelligent biomaterials that can be used for organ replacement, biosensors, precise drug delivery over days or weeks, and regenerative medicine are shown.
Abstract: New applications of biomaterials often require advanced structures containing synthetic and natural components that are tuned to provide properties unique to a specific application. We discuss how structural characteristics of biomaterials, especially hydrophilic ones, can be used in conjunction with non-ideal thermodynamics to develop advanced medical systems. We show a number of examples of biocompatible, intelligent biomaterials that can be used for organ replacement, biosensors, precise drug delivery over days or weeks, and regenerative medicine.

TL;DR: In this article, water and ion transport in thin sheets of initially dry, ionic, hydrophilic crosslinked polymers was modelled throughout the dynamic swelling process, and a new dimensionless number, the Stress Swelling number, A, was defined to quantify the relative importance of stress in the overall swelling process.
Abstract: Water and ion transport in thin sheets of initially dry, ionic, hydrophilic crosslinked polymers was modelled throughout the dynamic swelling process. The water transport was expressed in terms of a non-Fickian equation with a diffusion term containing a Fujitatype concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient coupled with a pseudoconvective term arising from the reasonable assumption that the stress in ionic polymers is proportional to the total number of ionized pendant groups in the polymer. Ion transport was expressed in terms of generalized Fickian equations with water concentration-dependent diffusion coefficients. These equations were solved with appropriate boundary conditions to establish the water uptake as a function of time, pH and ionic strength in a citrate-phosphate-borate buffer solution. A new dimensionless number, the Stress Swelling number, A, was defined to quantify the relative importance of stress in the overall swelling process. Water uptake was a strong function of A. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: In this paper, two biodegradable polymer intermediates, triacrylate 4 and tetra acrylate 7, were prepared by polycondensation reaction of ethyl β-hydroxybutyrate using glycerol and pentaerythritol as initiators and dibutyltin oxide as a catalyst, followed by functionalization of the hydroxyl end groups with acryloyl chloride in the presence of triethyl amine.
Abstract: Two biodegradable polymer intermediates, triacrylate 4 and tetraacrylate 7, were prepared by polycondensation reaction of ethyl β-hydroxybutyrate using glycerol and pentaerythritol as initiators and dibutyltin oxide as a catalyst, followed by functionalization of the hydroxyl end groups with acryloyl chloride in the presence of triethyl amine. These polymer intermediates were characterized using 1H-NMR and IR spectroscopic analysis and were employed as crosslinking agents during polymerization of partially neutralized acrylic acid to obtain the corresponding potentially biodegradable polyacrylates.

TL;DR: A new quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) assay was developed, which enabled the quantitative analysis of nanogel swelling, protein adsorption, and biodegradation in a single experiment, and was compared to those obtained by dynamic light scattering to highlight the advantages and limitations of each method.
Abstract: Environmentally responsive nanomaterials have been developed for drug delivery applications, in an effort to target and accumulate therapeutic agents at sites of disease. Within a biological system, these nanomaterials will experience diverse conditions which encompass a variety of solute identities and concentrations. In this study, we developed a new quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) assay, which enabled the quantitative analysis of nanogel swelling, protein adsorption, and biodegradation in a single experiment. As a proof of concept, we employed this assay to characterize non-degradable and biodegradable poly(acrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) nanogels. We compared the QCM-D results to those obtained by dynamic light scattering to highlight the advantages and limitations of each method. We detailed our protocol development and practical recommendations, and hope that this study will serve as a guide for others to design application-specific QCM-D assays within the nanomedicine domain.

TL;DR: In this article, a number of potentially muco-adhesive hydrophilic polymer microparticles with rat intestinal mucosa were investigated using the falling liquid film technique, and it was found that the mucoadhesive capacity was independent of the degree of polymer crosslinking and increased with increasing amount of the ionic component in the copolymers.

TL;DR: This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for "experimenters") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment.
Abstract: THE DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTS. By Oscar Kempthorne. New York, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., 1952. 631 pp. $8.50. This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Abstract: The 11th edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine welcomes Anthony Fauci to its editorial staff, in addition to more than 85 new contributors. While the organization of the book is similar to previous editions, major emphasis has been placed on disorders that affect multiple organ systems. Important advances in genetics, immunology, and oncology are emphasized. Many chapters of the book have been rewritten and describe major advances in internal medicine. Subjects that received only a paragraph or two of attention in previous editions are now covered in entire chapters. Among the chapters that have been extensively revised are the chapters on infections in the compromised host, on skin rashes in infections, on many of the viral infections, including cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus, on sexually transmitted diseases, on diabetes mellitus, on disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, and on lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly. The major revisions in these chapters and many

TL;DR: Probing the various interfaces of nanoparticle/biological interfaces allows the development of predictive relationships between structure and activity that are determined by nanomaterial properties such as size, shape, surface chemistry, roughness and surface coatings.
Abstract: Rapid growth in nanotechnology is increasing the likelihood of engineered nanomaterials coming into contact with humans and the environment. Nanoparticles interacting with proteins, membranes, cells, DNA and organelles establish a series of nanoparticle/biological interfaces that depend on colloidal forces as well as dynamic biophysicochemical interactions. These interactions lead to the formation of protein coronas, particle wrapping, intracellular uptake and biocatalytic processes that could have biocompatible or bioadverse outcomes. For their part, the biomolecules may induce phase transformations, free energy releases, restructuring and dissolution at the nanomaterial surface. Probing these various interfaces allows the development of predictive relationships between structure and activity that are determined by nanomaterial properties such as size, shape, surface chemistry, roughness and surface coatings. This knowledge is important from the perspective of safe use of nanomaterials.
