Human cognitive abilities: A survey of factor analytic studies

The growing use of mobile technology on college campuses suggests the future of the classroom, including learning activities, research, and even student faculty communications, will rely heavily on mobile technology. Since Fall 2010, an interdisciplinary team of faculty from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) has experimented with the use of iPads in the classroom. This paper includes the preliminary results of a study on student impressions of mobile technology in the classroom. The paper will report both opportunities and limitations for incorporating mobile technologies in learning environments.

iLearning: The Future of Higher Education? Student Perceptions on Learning with Mobile Tablets

There has been limited research into the intersection of language and arithmetic performance of students who are deaf or hard of hearing, although previous research has shown that many of these students are delayed in both language acquisition and arithmetic performance. The researchers examined the performance on arithmetic word problems of deaf and hard of hearing students in the South-East Queensland region of Australia; they also examined these students' problem-solving strategies. It was found that performance on word problems was similar for deaf and hearing students, but that deaf students experienced delays in achieving successful performance on word problems relative to their hearing peers. The results confirm the findings of other studies showing that students who are deaf or hard of hearing experience delayed language acquisition, which affects their capacity to solve arithmetic word problems. The study conclusions stress the need for greater use of direct teaching of analytic and strategic approaches to arithmetic word problems.

Cette recherchepropose d’etudier et de presenter des supports susceptibles d'ameliorer le processus d'apprentissage des personnesmalentendantes et sourdespar la mediation de nouveaux outils comme les tablettes tactiles.La question est de savoir si l’introduction de ces nouveaux outils, pourrait permettre la creation de didacticiels adaptesaux specificites cognitivesdes enfants sourds.Dans le contexte actuel, notre hypothese est que les nouvelles technologies informatiques et les outils numeriques (comme les tablettes tactiles) influenceraientpositivement le processus d’apprentissage des eleves sourds et malentendants.En consequence, nous avons cree un logiciel educatif, Digisthesia, qui a ete concu etadapte aux besoins des eleves sourdset malentendants. Le but de cet outil etait de developper et d’ameliorer 4 des principales potentialites cognitives : l’attention, la memoire, la vitesse de traitement et la resolution de problemes.Notre protocole a mobilise 80 eleves de 7 colleges de Lyon et de la peripherie lyonnaise : 40 elevesavec differents degres de deficience auditive, des sujets implantes et appareilles(20 participants ont utilise le logiciel educatif Digisthesia / 20personnesont fait partie du groupe de controle) ainsi que 40eleves sans deficiences auditives (20 participantsqui ont utilise notre logicieleducatif sur tablette tactile / 20 eleves ont fait partie dugroupe temoin).Lesresultats indiquent que la mediation par les nouvelles technologiesa renforce les potentialites cognitives des eleves sourds et malentendants. Nous avons observe un progres au niveau de l’apprentissage des participants sourds et malentendants suitea l’utilisation du logiciel educatif Digisthesia sur tablette tactile.
