Electromagnetic counterparts of compact object mergers powered by the radioactive decay of r‐process nuclei
Brian D. Metzger,Gabriel Martínez-Pinedo,Swaroop Darbha,Eliot Quataert,Almudena Arcones,Daniel Kasen,R. C. Thomas,Peter Nugent,I. V. Panov,I. V. Panov,Nikolaj Thomas Zinner +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the first calculations of the optical transients from compact object mergers that self-consistently determine the radioactive heating by means of a nuclear reaction network; using this heating rate, they model the light curve with a one-dimensional Monte Carlo radiation transfer calculation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis of A>64 nuclei: the nu p process
Carla Fröhlich,Gabriel Martínez-Pinedo,M. Liebendörfer,M. Liebendörfer,Friedrich-Karl Thielemann,Eduardo Bravo,William Raphael Hix,Karlheinz Langanke,Nikolaj Thomas Zinner +8 more
TL;DR: The nu p process as mentioned in this paper is a nucleosynthesis process that occurs in supernovae (and possibly gamma-ray bursts) when strong neutrino fluxes create proton-rich ejecta.
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition of the Innermost Core-Collapse Supernova Ejecta
Carla Fröhlich,P. Hauser,M. Liebendörfer,Gabriel Martínez-Pinedo,Friedrich-Karl Thielemann,Eduardo Bravo,Nikolaj Thomas Zinner,William Raphael Hix,Karlheinz Langanke,Anthony Mezzacappa,Ken'ichi Nomoto +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the neutrino-scattering cross sections on nucleons in the "gain region" were used to mimic the increase in neutrinos energy deposition enabled by convective turnover.
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition of the Innermost Core Collapse Supernova Ejecta
Carla Fröhlich,P. Hauser,M. Liebendoerfer,Gabriel Martínez-Pinedo,Friedrich-Karl Thielemann,Eduardo Bravo,Nikolaj Thomas Zinner,William Raphael Hix,Karlheinz Langanke,Anthony Mezzacappa,Ken'ichi Nomoto +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of neutrino scattering cross-sections on nucleons in the "gain region" were analyzed and it was shown that neutrinos in the gain region lead to similar results, causing explosions and a Ye>0.5 in the innermost ejected layers, due to the combined effect of a short weak interaction time scale and a negligible electron degeneracy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparing and contrasting nuclei and cold atomic gases
TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare and contrast the developments of cold atomic gases with the physics of nuclei since many concepts, techniques, and nomenclatures are common to both fields.
