Abstract: Xanthorrhizol (XNT) is a bisabolane-type sesquiterpenoid compound extracted from Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. It has been well established to possess a variety of biological activities such as anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihyperglycemic, antihypertensive, antiplatelet, nephroprotective, hepatoprotective, estrogenic and anti-estrogenic effects. Since many synthetic drugs possess toxic side effects and are unable to support the increasing prevalence of disease, there is significant interest in developing natural product as new therapeutics. XNT is a very potent natural bioactive compound that could fulfil the current need for new drug discovery. Despite its importance, a comprehensive review of XNT’s pharmacological activities has not been published in the scientific literature to date. Here, the present review aims to summarize the available information in this area, focus on its anticancer properties and indicate the current status of the research. This helps to facilitate the understanding of XNT’s pharmacological role in drug discovery, thus suggesting areas where further research is required.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a powerful tool to study the molecular level working mechanism of corrosion inhibitors in mitigating corrosion. In the past decades, MD simulation has emerged as an instrument to investigate the interactions at the interface between the inhibitor molecule and the metal surface. Combined with experimental measurement, theoretical examination from MD simulation delivers useful information on the adsorption ability and orientation of the molecule on the surface. It relates the microscopic characteristics to the macroscopic properties which enables researchers to develop high performance inhibitors. Although there has been vast growth in the number of studies that use molecular dynamic evaluation, there is still lack of comprehensive review specifically for corrosion inhibition of organic inhibitors on ferrous metal in acidic solution. Much uncertainty still exists on the approaches and steps in performing MD simulation for corrosion system. This paper reviews the basic principle of MD simulation along with methods, selection of parameters, expected result such as adsorption energy, binding energy and inhibitor orientation, and recent publications in corrosion inhibition studies.

Abstract: Privileged structures have been widely used as an effective template in medicinal chemistry for drug discovery. Chalcone is a common simple scaffold found in many naturally occurring compounds. Many chalcone derivatives have also been prepared due to their convenient synthesis. These natural products and synthetic compounds have shown numerous interesting biological activities with clinical potentials against various diseases. This review aims to highlight the recent evidence of chalcone as a privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry. Multiple aspects of chalcone will be summarized herein, including the isolation of novel chalcone derivatives, the development of new synthetic methodologies, the evaluation of their biological properties, and the exploration of the mechanisms of action as well as target identification. This review is expected to be a comprehensive, authoritative, and critical review of the chalcone template to the chemistry community.

Abstract: The aim of this review is to summarize the various naturally occurring chalcone compounds which have been isolated from different plants. Chalcones considered as obligate intermediated in flavonoid biosynthesis but they do not accumulate to appreciable degree in most plants. The largest number of natural chalcones has been isolated from species of the Leguminosae, Asteraceae and Moraceae families. Chalcone accumulating plants have often been used in traditional medicine and chalcones have therefore been studied and reported to possess many beneficial biological effects including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antitumor and chemopreventive activities. Previously published reviews on this topic survey the biological activities of natural and synthetic chalcones but there are no comprehensive contributions on occurrence and biological activities of natural chalcones. The present study provides an overview of hydroxy or/and methoxy-substituted chalcones, methylated, prenylated, geranylated and other monomeric derivatives, chromeno- and furanochalcones, dimeric chalcones and dihydrochalcone derivatives focusing on their biosynthesis, natural sources and biological activities. On the basis of 608 references, this review covers the phytochemistry and biological activity of natural chalcones, describing 646 compounds have been appeared in the literature since 1975. The summary is aimed to initiate further pharmacobotanical, biotechnological and medicinal studies on the field of chalcone research. This contribution reviews some of the general aspects of naturally occurring chalcones including their chemical categories, focusing on plant sources and biological activities. The review covers the major works appeared in the literature from 1975 up to 2014, relating to 608 references and 646 compounds.

Abstract: Members of the genus Curcuma L. have been used in traditional medicine for centuries for treating gastrointestinal disorders, pain, inflammatory conditions, wounds, and for cancer prevention and antiaging, among others. Many of the biological activities of Curcuma species can be attributed to nonvolatile curcuminoids, but these plants also produce volatile chemicals. Essential oils, in general, have shown numerous beneficial effects for health maintenance and treatment of diseases. Essential oils from Curcuma spp., particularly C. longa, have demonstrated various health-related biological activities and several essential oil companies have recently marketed Curcuma oils. This review summarizes the volatile components of various Curcuma species, the biological activities of Curcuma essential oils, and potential safety concerns of Curcuma essential oils and their components.

Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that belongs to the coronavirus family. The first case was reported in December 2019, and the disease has become a pandemic. Impaired immune regulation is one of the factors that play a role in its pathogenesis and results in poor outcomes of COVID-19 patients. There have been many studies with drug candidates used as antivirals or immunomodulators. However, the results of these investigations showed that the drug candidates were not significantly effective against the disease. Meanwhile, people believe that consuming herbal immunomodulators can prevent or even cure COVID-19. Unfortunately, specific preclinical and clinical trials to evaluate the effects of herbal immunoregulators have not been conducted. Certain natural compounds might be effective for the treatment of COVID-19 based on general concepts from previous experiments. This review discusses some herbal agents extracted from various plants, including Echinacea, Cinchona, Curcuma longa, and Curcuma xanthorrhiza, which are considered for the treatment of COVID-19. In addition, we discuss the pros and cons of utilising herbal medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, draw some conclusions, and make recommendations at the end of the session.
