Carry Select Adder (CSLA) is one of the fastest adders used in many data-processing processors to perform fast arithmetic functions. From the structure of the CSLA, it is clear that there is scope for reducing the area and power consumption in the CSLA. This work uses a simple and efficient gate-level modification to significantly reduce the area and power of the CSLA. Based on this modification 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-b square-root CSLA (SQRT CSLA) architecture have been developed and compared with the regular SQRT CSLA architecture. The proposed design has reduced area and power as compared with the regular SQRT CSLA with only a slight increase in the delay. This work evaluates the performance of the proposed designs in terms of delay, area, power, and their products by hand with logical effort and through custom design and layout in 0.18-μm CMOS process technology. The results analysis shows that the proposed CSLA structure is better than the regular SQRT CSLA.

Low-Power and Area-Efficient Carry Select Adder

This paper presents a method and an algorithm for generation of a parallel multiplier, which is optimized for speed. This method is applicable to any multiplier size and adaptable to any technology for which speed parameters are known. Most importantly, it is easy to incorporate this method in silicon compilation or logic synthesis tools. The parallel multiplier produced by the proposed method outperforms other schemes used for comparison in our experiment. It uses the minimal number of cells in the partial product reduction tree. These findings are tested on design examples simulated in 1 /spl mu/ CMOS ASIC technology.

A method for speed optimized partial product reduction and generation of fast parallel multipliers using an algorithmic approach

Binary carry-propagating addition can be efficiently expressed as a prefix computation. Several examples of adders based on such a formulation have been published and efficient implementations are numerous. Chief among the known constructions are those of Kogge and Stone (1973) and Ladner and Fischer (1980). In this work we show that these are end cases of a large family of addition structures, all of which share the attractive property of minimum logical depth. The intermediate structures allow trade-offs between the amount of internal wiring and the fanout of intermediate nodes, and can thus usually achieve a more attractive combination of speed and area/power cost than either of the known end-cases. Rules for the construction of such adders are given, as are examples of realistic 32b designs implemented in an industrial Ou25 CMOS process.

A family of adders

In modern VLSI technology, the occurrence of all kinds of errors has become inevitable. By adopting an emerging concept in VLSI design and test, error tolerance (ET), a novel error-tolerant adder (ETA) is proposed. The ETA is able to ease the strict restriction on accuracy, and at the same time achieve tremendous improvements in both the power consumption and speed performance. When compared to its conventional counterparts, the proposed ETA is able to attain more than 65% improvement in the Power-Delay Product (PDP). One important potential application of the proposed ETA is in digital signal processing systems that can tolerate certain amount of errors.

Design of Low-Power High-Speed Truncation-Error-Tolerant Adder and Its Application in Digital Signal Processing

The carry-select or conditional-sum adders require carry-chain evaluations for each block for both the values of block-carry-in, 0 and 1. The author introduces a scheme to generate carry bits with block-carry-in 1 from the carries of a block with block-carry-in 0. This scheme is then applied to carry-select and parallel-prefix adders to derive a more area-efficient implementation for both the cases. The proposed carry-select scheme is assessed relative to carry-ripple, classical carry-select, and carry-skip adders. A reduced-area scheme for carry-select adders

A large, extremely fast digital adder with sum selection and multiple-radix carry is described. Boolean expressions for the operation are included. The amount of hardware and the logical delay for a 100-bit ripple-carry adder and a carry-select adder are compared. The adder system described increases the speed of the addition process by reducing the carry-propagation time to the minimum commensurate with economical circuit design. The problem of carry-propagation delay is overcome by independently generating multiple-radix carries and using these carries to select between simultaneously generated sums. In this adder system, the addend and augend are divided into subaddend and subaugend sections that are added twice to produce two subsums. One addition is done with a carry digit forced into each section, and the other addition combines the operands without the forced carry digit. The selection of the correct, or true, subsum from each of the adder sections depends upon whether or not there actually is a carry into that adder section.
