Journal ArticleDOI
Fingerprinting the impacts of global change on tropical forests
TL;DR: Ten potential widespread drivers of environmental change were identified and each is expected to leave a unique 'fingerprint' in tropical forests, as drivers directly force different processes, have different distributions in space and time and may affect some forests more than others.
Journal ArticleDOI
Regional and seasonal patterns of litterfall in tropical South America
Jérôme Chave,Diego Navarrete,S. Almeida,Esteban Álvarez,Luiz E. O. C. Aragão,Damien Bonal,P. Châtelet,Javier E. Silva-Espejo,Jean-Yves Goret,P. von Hildebrand,E. M. Jimenez,Sandra Patiño,M. C. Peñuela,Oliver L. Phillips,Pablo R. Stevenson,Yadvinder Malhi +15 more
TL;DR: In this article, a large number of published and unpublished datasets (n=81 sites) were used to assess the determinants of litterfall variation across South American tropical forests, showing that litterfall averages 8.61±1.91 Mg ha−1 yr−1 (mean ± standard deviation, in dry mass units).
Journal ArticleDOI
Hyperdominance in Amazonian forest carbon cycling

TL;DR: It is found that dominance of forest function is even more concentrated in a few species than is dominance of tree abundance, with only ≈1% of Amazon tree species responsible for 50% of carbon storage and productivity.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The results show that the overall distribution of function does increase towards the equator, but the functional diversity within regional-scale tropical assemblages is higher than that expected given their species richness.

TL;DR: In this article, a pan-tropical dataset of 360 plots located in structurally intact old-growth closed-canopy forest, surveyed using standardised methods, allowing a multi-scale evaluation of diversity-carbon relationships in tropical forests.
