Journal ArticleDOI
Leaf traits from stomata to morphology are associated with climatic and edaphic variables for dominant tropical forest evergreen oaks
Yutong Lin,Luhui Kuang,Songbo Tang,Zhijian Mou,Oliver L. Phillips,Hans Lambers,Zhanfeng Liu,Jordi Sardans,Josep Peñuelas,Yuan Lai,Mingxian Lin,Dexiang Chen,Yuanwen Kuang +12 more
TL;DR: The results showed that the dominant oak species in tropical forests respond to environmental change by modulating traits at multiple levels, from that of the individual cell, through tissue, and up to the whole leaf scale.
Journal ArticleDOI
Confronting ethical challenges in long-term research programs in the tropics
Reinmar Seidler,Richard B. Primack,Varun R. Goswami,Sarala Khaling,M. Soubadra Devy,Richard T. Corlett,Cheryl D. Knott,Erin E. Kane,Tri Wahyu Susanto,Emily Otali,Robin Roth,Oliver L. Phillips,Timothy R. Baker,Corneille E. N. Ewango,Eurídice N. Honorio Coronado,Aurora Levesley,Simon L. Lewis,Beatriz Schwantes Marimon,Lan Qie,Bonaventure Sonké,John W. Wilson,Richard W. Wrangham +21 more
TL;DR: In this article, researchers share their experiences and perspectives in dealing with the ethical issues that arise during research activities and cannot be ignored, including economic inequalities, cultural differences, supporting the local communities as much as possible, and sharing the knowledge produced by the research.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scaling issues of neutral theory reveal violations of ecological equivalence for dominant Amazonian tree species
Edwin Pos,Juan Ernesto Guevara,Jean-François Molino,Daniel Sabatier,Olaf Bánki,Nigel C. A. Pitman,Hugo Mogollón,Roosevelt García-Villacorta,David A. Neill,Oliver L. Phillips,Carlos Cerón,Marcos Ríos Paredes,Percy Núñez Vargas,Nállarett Dávila,Anthony Di Fiore,Gonzalo Rivas-Torres,Gonzalo Rivas-Torres,Raquel Thomas-Caesar,Corine Vriesendorp,Kenneth R. Young,Milton Tirado,Ophelia Wang,Rodrigo Sierra,Italo Mesones,Roderick Zagt,Rodolfo Vasquez,Manuel Augusto Ahuite Reategui,Walter Palacios Cuenca,Elvis H. Valderrama Sandoval,Elvis H. Valderrama Sandoval,Hans ter Steege +30 more
TL;DR: It is shown that neutral theory not only underestimates the number of rare species but also fails in predicting the excessive dominance of species on both regional and local levels, a clear violation of the ecological equivalence assumption of neutral theory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate and crown damage drive tree mortality in southern Amazonian edge forests
Simone Matias Reis,Beatriz Schwantes Marimon,Adriane Esquivel-Muelbert,Ben Hur Marimon,Paulo S. Morandi,Fernando Elias,Edmar Almeida de Oliveira,David W. Galbraith,Ted R. Feldpausch,Imma Oliveras Menor,Yadvinder Malhi,Oliver L. Phillips +11 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors used 10 years of data from a widespread network of long-term forest plots, assessed how trees die (standing, broken or uprooted) and used generalised mixed-effect models to explore the contribution of plot, species and tree-level factors to the likelihood of tree death.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dinámica, biomasa aérea y composición florística en parcelas permanentes Reserva Nacional Tambopata, Madre de Dios, Perú
Nadir C. Pallqui,Abel Monteagudo,Oliver L. Phillips,Gabriela Lopez-Gonzalez,Luciano Cruz,Washington Galiano,Wilfredo Chavez,Rodolfo Vasquez +7 more
TL;DR: En this estudio se evaluaron los cambios en the biomasa aerea almacenada y su dinamica en el tiempo en 9 parcelas permanentes pertenecientes a la red de parcelas de RAINFOR (Red Amazonica de Inventarios Forestales) ubicadas dentro del bosque humedo tropical of the Reserva Nacional Tambopata en the llanura Amazonica.
