TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the implementation of electromobility assumptions on reduction of air pollution in cities in terms of sustainable urban transport systems was taken up, where the authors showed that public transport, apart from the obvious effect of decreased number of private vehicles and decreased congestion, can contribute to reduced air pollutant emissions and become a significant driver for the implementation in cities.
Abstract: This article has taken up an issue concerning the influence of the implementation of electromobility assumptions on reduction of air pollution in cities in terms of sustainable urban transport systems. The essential nature of the subject is confirmed by the following figures: transport is responsible for almost 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe and is the main cause of air pollution in cities, almost 90% of city dwellers in the EU are exposed to levels of air pollutants deemed harmful by the WHO, and approximately 95% of vehicles on European roads still use fossil fuels. Therefore, the implemented transport policy, both in the international and domestic aspect of particular countries, is facing the need to significantly reduce the negative influence of transport on people and the environment. Electromobility has become one of the concepts that makes it possible to achieve this goal. Its main objective is to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment by deploying electric vehicles (EVs). Research conducted by the authors showed that public transport, apart from the obvious effect of decreased number of private vehicles and decreased congestion, can contribute to reduced air pollutant emissions and become a significant driver for the implementation of electromobility in cities. However, the achievement of this goal depends on taking appropriate actions not only in the transport branch but also in other sectors of economy. The following research methods were applied in the article: literature analysis, documentary method, case study, and mathematical methods. The research area was the city of Szczecin, Poland.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the concept of using an innovative system of self-propelled train compositions for handling transport services of cities and agglomerations and the importance of railway in this aspect.
Abstract: The article discusses the changes in handling transport services of cities and agglomerations and the importance of railway in this aspect. Considerations on the transformation of the transport market, being the effect of changes on the market of goods and services and economic growth, the reasons for using railway transport in servicing urban and agglomeration traffic were identified. For many years the features characterizing rail transport have constituted a determinant of its use for the long-distance transport of homogeneous large cargo mass and long-distance transport of a significant number of passengers. The economic growth, and thus the increase in requirements on the transport market, caused a significant development of road transport in the short term. However, due to the negative external effects generated by this transport, as well as the change in the transport policy of individual countries and regions, steps have been taken towards the inter-branch diversification of transport services. Together with the dissemination of the concept of sustainable development, protection of the interests of future generations and limitation of emissions of harmful substances into the natural environment, innovative concepts, products and services to meet the tasks of a modern and responsible market appeared. The purpose of this article was to answer the following question: Is there a possibility for rail transport to be an important element of sustainable urban transport systems? Therefore, the article presents the concept of using an innovative system of self-propelled train compositions for handling transport services of cities and agglomerations. These train compositions, due to their limited length, their own propulsion system, and the control cabins located at both sides of the train, can be an alternative for handling feeder and transfer services in the agglomeration area, previously implemented mainly by means of road transport. The research area was Szczecin agglomeration with the city of Szczecin. Considerations and inferences were made on the basis of literature analysis, documentary method, external observation and methods of analysis and synthesis. This publication and/or research have been partially financed under the grant No 3/S/IZT/2018 financed from a subsidy of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for statutory activities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors illustrate the drivers behind current rises in the use of low-cost sensors for air pollution management in cities, whilst addressing the major challenges for their effective implementation.
Abstract: Ever growing populations in cities are associated with a major increase in road vehicles and air pollution. The overall high levels of urban air pollution have been shown to be of a significant risk to city dwellers. However, the impacts of very high but temporally and spatially restricted pollution, and thus exposure, are still poorly understood. Conventional approaches to air quality monitoring are based on networks of static and sparse measurement stations. However, these are prohibitively expensive to capture tempo-spatial heterogeneity and identify pollution hotspots, which is required for the development of robust real-time strategies for exposure control. Current progress in developing low-cost micro-scale sensing technology is radically changing the conventional approach to allow real-time information in a capillary form. But the question remains whether there is value in the less accurate data they generate. This article illustrates the drivers behind current rises in the use of low-cost sensors for air pollution management in cities, whilst addressing the major challenges for their effective implementation.

TL;DR: A scenario for 2030 for the Moroccan electricity system is studied and the challenges that need to be addressed are identified in order to accelerate the integration of renewable energies in the Moroccan energy mix and to achieve a possible export of such green energy towards Europe.
Abstract: Renewable energies are a sustainable, unlimited and decarbonised solution to address future energy challenges. In this context, Morocco has a considerable advantage to position itself on this promising market. Furthermore, renewable energies have been highlighted as a key strategic source for the country's green growth. Morocco has adopted the renewable energy path through a strategy targeted on the development of solar, wind and hydroelectric power to boost its energy policy by adapting it to the challenges posed by today's world. Nowadays, Morocco is facing a challenge to reach 52% by 2030 of its total renewable energy capacity, which will exceed 42% by the end of 2020. The main objective of this paper is to study a scenario for 2030 for the Moroccan electricity system and to identify the challenges that need to be addressed in order to accelerate the integration of renewable energies in the Moroccan energy mix and to achieve a possible export of such green energy towards Europe.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a methodology for the calculation of direct and indirect emissions for different types of fuels and tractions based on regression functions, which can be used for the assessment of environmental impacts of specific types of vehicles concerning energy source, fuel, or powertrain and type of operation.
Abstract: Diesel is the most used fuel for buses and other urban transport vehicles in European countries. This paper deals with impacts on emissions production from the operation of the urban public transport fleet after its renewal. To what extent can the renewal of the urban public transport fleet in the city of Žilina contribute to increasing environmental sustainability in the way of reducing air pollution? The vehicle fleet change has partially consisted of vehicle traction system transition-diesel buses were substituted by hybrid driven (HEV) and electric driven buses (BEV). How can the direct and indirect emissions from the operation of vehicles be calculated? These were the posed research questions. The research aimed to propose a methodology for the calculation of direct and indirect emissions. Indirect emissions values (WtT—Well-to-Tank) for different types of fuels and tractions were obtained based on regression functions. These WtT emission factors together with the existing TtW (Tank-to-Wheels) emission factors (direct emissions) can be used for the assessment of environmental impacts of specific types of vehicles concerning energy source, fuel, or powertrain and type of operation. Direct pollutants such as CO, NOx and PM were calculated with the use of simulation methodology of HBEFA (Handbook of Emission Factors for Road Transport) software. The calculated CO2 savings for the period 2019–2023 about fleet renewal in absolute terms are EUR 1.3 million tons compared to the operation of the original fleet while maintaining the same driving performance. The renewal of the vehicle fleet secured by vehicle traction transition can be a way to reduce the energy intensity and environmental impacts of public transport in Žilina.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors make use of perspectives from political science regarding implementation theory in order to facilitate urban freight policy, and identify key barriers to implementation of UCC, which are primarily related to financial concerns and stakeholder acceptability.
Abstract: As a measure for more environmentally friendly and efficient urban freight, the Norwegian capital Oslo sought to implement an urban consolidation center (UCC) demonstration in the city center. However, the process of establishing UCC as a demonstration measure within the set time frame was ultimately stopped without success. By using the experiences from this process, the paper provides a more solid basis for renewed efforts at implementation in the future. With basis in implementation theory, the study identifies key barriers to implementation of UCC. Findings indicate that the barriers are primarily related to financial concerns and stakeholder acceptability. However, institutional, practical and legal barriers are also of significance. Strategies to overcome the identified barriers are suggested, most importantly the need for establishing a credible and sound business model. The study makes use of perspectives from political science regarding implementation theory in order to facilitate urban freight policy. As such, it represents a novel scholarly approach in the field of urban freight research. The evaluation framework can be useful for similar studies to come and for policymakers in the design and implementation of new policy measures for urban freight.
