The academic performance of married women students in Nigerian higher education

This paper reports on a qualitative case study located within interpretative paradigm. This study aimed at understanding the role of school principals in leading and managing democratic schools. Towards that, semi-structured interviews were used to obtain data from research participants. The findings of the study reveal that leadership is a major role of principals in democratic schools, as it also extended to others in the school community; and as such, flattens traditional leadership hierarchies. Further, it contradicts predominate findings of previous researches on authoritarian leadership behavior. At both sampled schools, the principals seem to move away from assumed stereotypical authoritarian style to a shared decision-making style, that is, democratic leadership style. Based on the findings it is recommended that more can be done through the inclusion of stakeholders in major decision-making processes.

Leadership Role of School Principals in Democratic Schools in South Africa: Case Studies of Two Schools

This article provides comprehensive and summarised insights to the epistemologies of feminism. It is an exploratory research, which used epistemological theory; and a methodological analysis embedded in the system approach theory of literature review as its theoretical foundation. Reviewing the literature as a means of researching could be problematic following the scanty, irrelevant and at times voluminous materials available to researchers. On account of this a content analysis research method was used. Among its revelations, this article reveals that feminism theorists seek to understand how political and social relations of gender have shaped our understanding of challenges, desires and anticipations of women, not only in the present and in limited capacity but also to understand how we ought to know and how we can improve our knowledge practices. Also, feminist theories provide justifications for the study of feminism and the need for linking the subject to other fields of inquiry given its links, for example, to capitalism and socialism as alluded to by Marxists and radical theorists respectively. Conversations with Epistemologies of Feminism: A Systematic Review

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the perceptions of school governing bodies (SGBs) members’ role in financial management in no-fee schools so as to understand their compliance with policy frameworks when managing school finances. No-fee schools are schools in which the learners cannot be levied fees because of the poor socio-economic background of their parents, and are located in Quintiles 1-3 according to National Norms and Standards for School Funding Policy.,A qualitative research design/approach within the interpretive paradigm was adopted for the study. A sample of 22 participants from six selected no-fee schools was purposefully selected to participate in the study. The participants were principals, SGB chairpersons, SGB treasurers and finance officers. Data were collected through interviews and document analyses and were qualitatively analysed through coding and categorisation.,The findings reveal that the perceptions, experience and understanding of SGB members on their financial management roles differ. They lacked the proper knowledge to manage their funds effectively. This lack of knowledge is mainly because of the members’ literacy level and limited training.,This study offers a novel empirical and theoretical perspective on finance of no-fee schools and SGBs. This research subsequently recommends that rigorous training of chairpersons and treasurers should be done by department officials located in the finance section. Further, training should be conducted in a language that would be understood by the intended recipients.

Policy compliance of SGB members on their financial management roles in selected no-fee schools in Limpopo province of South Africa

The focus of this article is immigrant women’s perceptions of social change, and how they respond to it. In the article, social change refers to the fact that more people than ever before are engaged in different activities that lead to alterations in the norms and behavioural patterns of people as individuals or as a group in society. The study analysed social change via the perceptions of individuals—immigrant Nigerian women in South African higher education. In line with phenomenological research with which this article is aligned, an intrinsic qualitative case study approach—interviews—was employed to gather data. The cases involved four Nigerian women who are currently residing in South Africa and studying at higher education institutions in the country. Snowball sampling was used to select participants. Social change, as revealed in this article, is a lens that can be used to better understand individuals as a society or people. Furthermore, and in terms of materialist social theory that was utilised, this article reveals that social change relates to economic relationships between self (individuals or group) and society where survival of people is linked to surplus economic goods and the acquisition of tangible and intangible wants in order to deal with the fear of an unknown future. The article concludes that the understanding of self as a fallout of social change is a means of understanding others and vice versa, which can help people—especially locals or indigenes—conquer their fear of foreigners or immigrants.
